Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate for the 2023 election, has firmly stated his intention to continue contesting for the presidency as long as he remains in good health. In an interview with the Hausa service of Voice of America in Abuja, Atiku emphasized his determination to remain an active participant in Nigeria's presidential elections.
When asked about his future political ambitions, Atiku responded decisively: "Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy." He drew a parallel to former US President Abraham Lincoln, who contested multiple times before finally achieving electoral success. "Even the former US President Abraham Lincoln contested seven times before finally winning," Atiku noted, underscoring his commitment to perseverance in his political career.
Acknowledging the challenges facing the PDP, Atiku highlighted the necessity of collective effort and strategic alliances to secure electoral victory. "Given the current state of the PDP, it is clear that a single-handed effort will not suffice to win the election. Strong support and collaboration with other parties are required," he stated.
By the time of the next presidential election in 2027, Atiku will be 81 years old. Despite his age, his resolve remains undiminished. Atiku has run for the presidency six times, appearing on the ballot as a presidential candidate in 2007, 2019, and 2023. Reflecting on his electoral journey, he found solace in the story of Abraham Lincoln, who also faced repeated defeats before achieving victory. "I am consoled by the fact that former United States President Abraham Lincoln did not win the presidential vote on the first time of asking," Atiku remarked.
In discussing the internal crisis within the PDP, Atiku stressed the importance of unity and forging alliances with other political groups to enhance their chances in the 2027 presidential election. "The party needs to be united and forge alliances with other political groups to win the presidential election in 2027," he said. This perspective aligns with ongoing speculation about the possibility of Atiku forming a coalition with other political parties.
Recently, Atiku met with Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, sparking rumors about potential collaboration. Addressing these speculations, Atiku reassured that there was no animosity between him and Obi. "This is to anybody that thinks there is going to be a misunderstanding between me and Obi; let me assure you that not even a small issue is going to happen between us," Atiku affirmed, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining positive relations and exploring collaborative opportunities.
Atiku Abubakar's unwavering determination to contest the presidency, coupled with his recognition of the need for political alliances, marks a significant chapter in Nigeria's evolving political landscape. His experience and resilience continue to shape his approach to future elections, reflecting a broader strategy aimed at securing the support necessary for electoral success. As 2027 approaches, Atiku's political journey remains a focal point of interest, with his actions and alliances likely to influence the dynamics of the Nigerian political arena.
