In recognition of the economic challenges currently facing the country, President Bola Tinubu has approved a modest celebration for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day. This decision was communicated by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), during a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday.

A Reflection of the Nation’s Mood

Senator Akume explained that the decision for a subdued celebration aligns with the prevailing sentiment across the country. “In alignment with the mood of the nation, the President has approved that the 64th Independence celebration should be low-keyed,” Akume stated.

He further elaborated that the scaled-back commemoration is intended to remind Nigerians of their collective strength, resilience, and unity amidst adversity. Akume highlighted the importance of recognizing the nation’s diversity and the significant strides the Tinubu administration has made within a short time. He noted that this year's celebration is also meant to serve as a symbol of hope for a brighter future, anchored in the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda.

Schedule of Events

Despite the modest scale of this year’s Independence Day celebrations, several key events will still take place. The planned activities include:

  • A World Press Conference
  • Special Juma’at Prayer
  • Inter-denominational Church Service
  • Presidential Broadcast
  • 64th Independence Anniversary Parade at the Presidential Villa

However, the traditionally elaborate celebrations and public festivities that often accompany Independence Day have been notably absent from the lineup this year.

Acknowledgment of Economic Hardships

Akume acknowledged the economic difficulties currently confronting Nigerians, particularly in light of recent government policy decisions. He expressed the administration’s understanding and sympathy, stating, “This government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is very much aware of and deeply sympathises with all Nigerians over the economic conditions we are passing through. These have been occasioned by unavoidable policy choices, including the removal of fuel subsidies, that his administration has had to make.”

Government Initiatives to Mitigate Economic Challenges

To address the economic pressures, Akume outlined several government initiatives aimed at alleviating the burden on Nigerians. One such measure is the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative, designed to reduce transportation costs. As part of this initiative, the government recently launched 30 hybrid buses powered by CNG.

In addition, Akume announced that CNG conversion kits are being distributed free of charge to Nigerians, making it easier for citizens to adapt to alternative fuel sources. Efforts are also underway to bolster support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to stimulate economic growth.

Addressing National Security and Flood Relief Efforts

Akume also spoke about the government’s progress in addressing national security concerns. He reported that significant strides have been made in neutralizing insurgents and bandits, with many combatants surrendering to authorities for rehabilitation and deradicalization.

Further, he acknowledged the recent challenges posed by flooding in parts of the country, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing relief and enhancing efforts to ensure food security.

A Call for Unity and Resilience

As Nigeria marks 64 years of independence, Akume called on citizens to remain united and hopeful despite the challenges the nation is facing. “Let us therefore stand united, resilient, and hopeful,” he urged, emphasizing that national unity is essential for overcoming current and future obstacles
