The newly appointed factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Yayari Ahmed Mohammed, has reaffirmed his commitment to following the party’s leadership directives, dismissing any concerns over external threats. He emphasized that the faction will remain focused on resolving internal issues through party structures rather than reacting to threats from opposing factions.

Responding to Threats from the Damagum-led Faction

This response follows a statement made by Ibrahim Abdullahi, the acting National Publicity Secretary of the Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) faction, during a press briefing in Abuja. Abdullahi had warned that security measures might be employed against Mohammed’s faction to ensure adherence to the party’s constitution and uphold the rule of law.

“We must ensure that actions are guided by the party’s constitution, not by personal interests or sentiments,” Abdullahi stated. “Given the reckless disregard for a standing court order, we are left with no choice but to consider deploying security agencies to enforce the rule of law within the party.”

Mohammed’s Call for Party-led Resolution

In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on the same day, Yayari Mohammed outlined his faction’s position, advocating for resolution through the PDP’s established organs, such as the governors’ forum and the Board of Trustees (BoT), rather than resorting to confrontational tactics. Mohammed expressed confidence in the party’s leadership and a desire to avoid unnecessary escalation.

“We have communicated all our concerns and positions to the organs of the party, including the governors’ forum, the Board of Trustees, and other key members. Our reasons for taking this stance have been made clear,” Mohammed explained.

Confidence in Party Leadership

Mohammed further stated that the faction had received assurances from party leadership, including the governors’ forum and the BoT, that their concerns would be thoroughly reviewed, and a resolution would be reached in due course.

“They have assured us that they will take a position and get back to us soon. As such, we are not worried about any threats. They can go ahead and take whatever actions they deem necessary,” Mohammed stated confidently.

Awaiting a Peaceful Resolution

Expressing optimism about an amicable resolution, Mohammed indicated that his faction expects feedback from party leadership by the end of the week. He reiterated that their commitment remains with the party and its structures, rather than reacting to threats or external pressures.

“I am confident that by Friday, our leaders will reach out to us with a solution. Until then, we will remain focused on our discussions with them, not on any threats,” Mohammed concluded.

This ongoing dispute underscores the internal tensions within the PDP as various factions vie for control and influence over the party’s future direction. However, Mohammed’s faction remains committed to a peaceful resolution through dialogue and party leadership engagement.
