Former militant leader, Asari Dokubo, recently voiced his frustration over what he perceives as betrayal by the Yoruba people following his and the Niger Delta’s support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His remarks have sparked a wave of reactions across Nigeria, as he now pledges to shift alliances towards the North.

Alleged Betrayal of Niger Delta by Yoruba Allies

In a video circulating on social media, Dokubo expressed regret over the allegiance shown to the Yoruba, claiming that despite the Niger Delta’s sacrifices and significant support for President Tinubu, they have not received the recognition or support they expected in return. He stated that this perceived betrayal has led him to reevaluate past alliances and apologize to key figures in Niger Delta history for challenging their decisions to work with northern allies.

Apology to Melford Okilo and Other Niger Delta Leaders

Dokubo extended an apology to prominent figures like the late former Governor of Rivers State, Melford Okilo, and other Niger Delta leaders who historically forged alliances with northern Nigeria. Reflecting on their choices, Dokubo admitted he was wrong to question their wisdom. According to him, recent events have validated their decisions, as he believes the North could offer a more reliable partnership for the Ijaw and Niger Delta people.

Commitment to a New Alliance with Northern Nigeria

Vowing to forge a stronger relationship with the North, Dokubo stated his intention to actively promote this alliance across the Niger Delta. He affirmed his belief that the Ijaw people will find greater support and understanding from northern leaders and pledged to work tirelessly towards this new direction.

“As of today, I will work vigorously to build an alliance with the North and suppress any opposition that disregards our interests,” Dokubo stated. “For those who disregard the Ijaw, our actions and contributions mean nothing to them. Therefore, we will spread the message across Ijaw land that it is the North we can depend on.”

Condemnation of Yoruba as Betrayers

Dokubo concluded his message with a condemnation of the Yoruba people, labeling them as untrustworthy allies who, he believes, have failed to reciprocate the sacrifices made by the Niger Delta people. “We cannot work with the Yoruba people; they are betrayers,” he stated. “We risked our lives, voted, and did everything to support them, and this is the outcome we face.”

Future Direction for Niger Delta’s Political Alliances

This declaration by Asari Dokubo signals a potential shift in the political alliances within the Niger Delta, as he advocates for a stronger collaboration with northern Nigeria. His comments have stirred both support and criticism, reflecting ongoing tensions and complex alliances within Nigeria’s political landscape.
