In a recent interview, former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo credited President Bola Tinubu for standing by him during a challenging period when former President Olusegun Obasanjo allegedly sought to “bury him alive.” Speaking on Arise TV's Morning Show, Dokubo shared insights into his longstanding relationship with Tinubu and how this bond shaped their interactions over the years.
Long-Standing Relationship with Tinubu
Dokubo reflected on his enduring connection with Tinubu, which he said began during Nigeria’s military era. He emphasized that his support for Tinubu stems from a deeply rooted relationship, built long before Tinubu’s ascendance to national prominence.
"I supported Mr. President because I knew him before he became senator, president, and, God willing, I will also know him when he ceases to be president. But this is not about me or Tinubu; it’s about my people,” he explained, stressing that his loyalty extends beyond individual interests to a broader commitment to his community.
Tinubu's Unwavering Support in Difficult Times
Dokubo detailed how Tinubu's assistance has consistently been a one-way relationship where he has primarily benefited from Tinubu's generosity and support. He noted that this dynamic continued until Tinubu’s presidential run, when Dokubo could reciprocate for the first time.
"At all times, the benefit I derived from that relationship was one-way traffic, which was from Tinubu alone,” he acknowledged. He expressed gratitude for being able to stand by Tinubu during the election, seeing it as a rare opportunity to repay a debt of loyalty.
Recounting Obasanjo's Actions
Dokubo alluded to a specific period under Obasanjo’s administration when he felt targeted, stating, “At the time, Obasanjo buried me alive, but [Tinubu] stood by me.” His words highlight the loyalty and resilience of his bond with Tinubu, which he sees as a significant part of his life narrative.
A Bond Rooted in Loyalty
Dokubo’s statements underscore a commitment to Tinubu that he is prepared to honor beyond politics. “If he comes out tomorrow, I will still do it,” Dokubo emphasized, reflecting the depth of his gratitude for Tinubu's past support during Obasanjo's tenure.
Dokubo's recollections illustrate the loyalty that has characterized his relationship with Tinubu, revealing a history of mutual respect and solidarity through challenging times
