Gunmen attacked the Ehime-Mbano Local Government Area (LGA) in Imo State on Tuesday, reportedly killing several soldiers stationed at the army camp in the community. The attack, which has sparked widespread fear, was reported by The Cable and has left residents terrified.

Attack on the Military Camp

On the night of October 8, around 8:30 p.m., a group of gunmen stormed the army camp in Ehime-Mbano, opening fire on the soldiers. According to a local resident who spoke with The Cable, several soldiers were killed in the assault, and numerous operational vehicles were set ablaze. The gunmen were seen chanting battle songs and taunting the military forces as they wreaked havoc.

In a viral video from the scene, the attackers could be heard shouting, "The angels are who we are. Here they are, the angels. The armed forces have fled. For what reason are they running? They ought to face us and stand up." They also declared, "We are residing at the Ehime-Mbano military camp. It is October 8th, and we are the angels. We are here to seize control."

Recent Spate of Violence

The attack in Ehime-Mbano follows a series of incidents in the area, including the torching of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) study center in the Ezeoke Nsu neighborhood just one week earlier. In addition to this, the home of Frank Ibezim, a former senator representing Imo North, was also set on fire by suspected thugs.

These violent events have created a climate of fear in the community, with many residents expressing concern over their safety. One local resident stated, "Panic grips our community. People are terrified to live here. Our land has been overrun by gunmen. Nobody is secure these days. The government needs to act quickly to save us."

Official Response

The Imo State police command, through its spokesperson Henry Okoye, has yet to provide an official statement on the incident. Similarly, the Nigerian Army's spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

The attack on the army camp has raised serious concerns about the deteriorating security situation in the region, with many calling on both state and federal authorities to take urgent action to restore peace and protect civilians
