Ijaw National Congress Urges Presidential Intervention in Rivers State Crisis
The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has made a critical appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for his intervention in the ongoing power struggle between Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This appeal was conveyed by Professor Benjamin Okaba, President of the Ijaw National Congress, during a press conference held in Abuja on Tuesday.
Power Tussle in Rivers State
Rivers State has been embroiled in a contentious political struggle between two key figures: Nyesom Wike, the former governor and current FCT Minister, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The power tussle has raised concerns among various stakeholders, including the Ijaw National Congress, which fears that the situation, if not resolved promptly, could spiral out of control and affect other regions of Nigeria.
Questioning the Overreliance on Wike
Professor Okaba emphasized the political importance of securing votes from Rivers State for President Tinubu's political ambitions but questioned the widespread belief that only Wike could deliver these votes. "We understand the need to support President Tinubu in gaining favor in Rivers State, but we find it puzzling that Nyesom Wike is seen as the sole figure capable of achieving this," Okaba stated.
This viewpoint reflects growing dissatisfaction with the notion that Wike’s influence is indispensable for Tinubu's success in the region, particularly in light of ongoing political conflicts within the state.
Governor Fubara's Compliance vs. Wike's Defiance
While acknowledging that Governor Fubara has been making efforts to follow President Tinubu’s eight-point directive aimed at resolving the crisis, Okaba criticized Wike for his non-compliance. Specifically, he noted Wike’s refusal to withdraw several court cases he had initiated, which further deepens the political divide in the state.
"Governor Fubara has been committed to implementing the President’s directives, yet Wike continues to disregard these efforts by maintaining his legal battles," Okaba remarked.
A Direct Appeal to President Tinubu
In his address, Professor Okaba directly appealed to President Tinubu, urging him to take immediate action to prevent the crisis from escalating. “Mr. President, as the father of the nation, we appeal to you to call the FCT Minister to order. This is essential for maintaining the peace and security of Nigeria. We must stop this drift towards national disintegration and potential anarchy,” he urged.
Growing Concerns Over National Stability
The appeal from the Ijaw National Congress highlights the growing concern over the political instability in Rivers State, as tensions between Wike and Fubara show no signs of abating. The INC’s request underscores the need for a swift resolution to the crisis, as the ongoing conflict not only threatens the stability of Rivers State but also poses broader risks to national unity.
As stakeholders continue to voice their concerns, there is hope that President Tinubu’s intervention will bring about a resolution that fosters peace, stability, and unity within both the region and the nation as a whole
