Jumoke George Opens Up About Harassment in the Film Industry
Veteran actress Jumoke George has revealed the painful experiences she endured in the Nigerian film industry, exposing the predatory behavior of some influential figures. In a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, the 59-year-old actress shared her struggles, including the pressure to compromise her morals in exchange for movie roles, a practice that left her sidelined from the industry for over a decade.
Facing Pressure to Compromise Integrity
Jumoke George recounted that throughout her career, she encountered numerous instances where film executives demanded sexual favors in exchange for acting opportunities. Her refusal to participate in these unethical practices came at a steep cost, leading to a staggering 14-year absence from the screen. Despite her undeniable talent, her career was overshadowed by the pervasive issue of "sex-for-roles," a practice that continues to plague the industry.
“I refused to sleep around for roles,” she said. “That was one of the major reasons I was blacklisted and did not see the back of a lens for over a decade.”
Colorism and Beauty Standards in the Industry
In addition to facing sexual harassment, Jumoke George also battled colorism within the film industry. Her rich, dark complexion became a point of contention among some directors who suggested she bleach her skin to conform to their narrow standards of beauty. Despite the criticism, George remained resolute in her decision to embrace her natural skin tone, refusing to alter her appearance for roles.
“My skin tone was not the only setback,” she explained. “They complained I was too dark, but I told them to add lighting to the scene if they wanted me to appear lighter. I will not change who I am, and I will glow with this skin till old age. Black does not crack.”
Blacklisted for Rejecting Advances
One of the most chilling moments in her career came when a director informed her that she was being blacklisted for refusing to engage in sexual relationships with industry insiders. George described how this director used the phrase “removal of pants” to illustrate the kind of exploitative demands that were common in the industry.
Reflecting on the situation, George said, “If you dated one of them and then broke up, they would talk about you among themselves. I decided that as long as God exists, I would never find myself in such a space.”
Determined to Uphold Her Principles
Despite the immense pressure from over 20 to 30 individuals in the industry, Jumoke George stood firm in her principles. She refused to compromise her integrity, even when it meant sacrificing her career. Her decision to maintain her moral standards, despite the consequences, speaks to her unwavering strength and commitment to herself and her values.
“I was determined not to become a pass-around among them,” she stated. “You cannot push me into something I do not want to do.”
A Message of Resilience and Self-Worth
Jumoke George’s story sheds light on the darker side of the entertainment industry, where appearance and sexual favors often take precedence over talent and skill. Her experience serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for one’s values, no matter the cost.
As the film industry continues to evolve, her testimony underscores the urgent need for reform and greater protections for artists, particularly women, who face harassment and exploitation. Despite the setbacks she endured, George remains a figure of resilience and dignity, proving that one’s self-worth is far more valuable than any role.
