The Nigerian Army on Saturday formally retired 15 senior officers from the Artillery Corps in a ceremony held at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery (NASA) in Kachia, Kaduna State.
Ceremony Details and Ranks of Retirees
The 15 officers included 11 Major Generals and four Brigadier Generals. This symbolic event marked the culmination of their long military careers. The lead officer at the ceremony, retired Maj.-Gen. James Myam, spoke on behalf of the group, reflecting on their service and the significance of the moment.
Reflection on Years of Service
In his address, Maj.-Gen. Myam expressed gratitude, stating, “Having come this far, we feel highly fulfilled and give all the glory to the Lord God Almighty for His mercies, grace, and preservation over the years.” He extended appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve the nation and to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, wishing him strength and wisdom to lead the Army to greater heights.
Words of Wisdom to Serving Officers
Maj.-Gen. Myam shared reflections on his career, which began when he and his colleagues reported to the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna. He emphasized the importance of loyalty, vigilance, and security consciousness for those still in active service. He noted, “Empathy, proactiveness, and effective communication” were the key traits that guided him throughout his military career.
He reminded the serving officers that Nigeria now enjoys democratic governance, and the era of military involvement in politics is over. "To those of you who are determined to make the military a career, remember that the era of military involvement in politics has gone and gone for good," he remarked, urging them to remain loyal to the Constitution and the democratically elected government.
Government Support for the Armed Forces
Maj.-Gen. Myam acknowledged the efforts of the government in providing for the Armed Forces but reminded his colleagues to understand the competing demands on national resources. "The government usually prioritises allocation of resources based on the needs of various sectors," he said, urging continued support for government activities and demonstrating commitment to the nation, particularly in the fight against armed and criminal non-state actors.
Appreciation and Encouragement
In closing, Maj.-Gen. Myam expressed gratitude for the support received from their families, instructors, mentors, and friends throughout their military careers. He extended his appreciation to the Nigerian Army and the Corps of Artillery and encouraged the “Gunners Family” to continue striving for excellence.
The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, including retired Maj.-Gen. Alwali Kazir, a former Chief of Army Staff, as well as other senior retired and serving military officers
