A peaceful protest organized by the Concerned Indigenes of Bauchi State took place in Abuja on Thursday, raising serious allegations against the Bauchi State Government. The protestors accused the state administration of financial misappropriation and failing to address the increasing insecurity plaguing the region.
March to National Assembly and EFCC Headquarters
The protestors, carrying placards with inscriptions such as "Bauchi State is Bleeding," "Killings of Innocent Citizens," and "Kaura Must Go," marched from Eagle Square to the National Assembly. Their aim was to bring national attention to their concerns and demand urgent intervention from federal authorities.
In addition to the National Assembly, the group also made their way to the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to submit a petition. This action was a follow-up to a previous petition lodged against the Bauchi State Government, alleging corruption and misuse of public funds.
Allegations of Misappropriation and Insecurity
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the group’s coordinator, Suleiman Mohammed, emphasized the gravity of the situation in Bauchi State. According to Mohammed, both financial misconduct and the rising insecurity have had devastating effects on the state’s residents.
"We are here to pass the message across to the nation that innocent souls are being killed in Bauchi State and money is being misappropriated," Mohammed said, expressing frustration over the government's inaction in addressing their grievances.
Criticism of State Security Agencies
The protesters voiced their dissatisfaction with the response of Bauchi State’s security apparatus, accusing the agencies of not doing enough to address the ongoing crisis. When asked why they chose to protest in Abuja instead of approaching the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Mohammed explained that their attempts to resolve the matter locally had been ignored.
"We decided to come to the centre of the nation so that we can pass the message across, so that people can hear and see what is going on, and so that they can come to our rescue," he said.
Petition Against Governor Bala Mohammed
The group reiterated their previous submission to the EFCC, calling for a thorough investigation into Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration. The protestors claimed that despite submitting a petition two weeks earlier, no action had been taken. They expressed their concern over what they described as ongoing "looting and killings" in the state.
"We are here to complain to the commission again. We want to know what is being done about the looting and killings of innocent souls in Bauchi State," Mohammed said.
Appeal to the Federal Government
In their concluding remarks, the protesters made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government, urging it to intervene and address the alleged corruption and insecurity in Bauchi State. They called on authorities to take decisive action to restore peace and accountability in the region, hoping for prompt relief from the ongoing challenges affecting the state's citizens
