Shifting Allegiances in Rivers State Assembly

In a recent broadcast on TVC News, Ugochinyere Ikenga, the spokesperson for opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives, voiced his concerns over the ongoing political maneuvers in Rivers State. He specifically targeted lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike, accusing them of attempting to undermine the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Ikenga questioned their shifting allegiances, noting their back-and-forth movements between the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ikenga's comments come in the wake of efforts by a faction in the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Fubara. He criticized the lawmakers for initially pledging loyalty to the APC through sworn affidavits, only to later reverse their stance and claim to be PDP members. According to Ikenga, this sudden shift was a calculated move to legitimize their political activities and attempt a renewed effort to unseat Governor Fubara.

Allegations Against Wike's Influence

Ikenga also took aim at Nyesom Wike, accusing the former governor of exercising undue influence over the pro-impeachment lawmakers. He argued that Wike’s involvement in the situation has exacerbated tensions in the state assembly and undermined the principles of democracy. According to Ikenga, the actions of these lawmakers constitute a betrayal of the democratic process and disregard for the constitutional framework that governs Nigeria.

"Their shifting political affiliations and attempts to manipulate the situation only serve to weaken the integrity of democratic governance," Ikenga remarked. He further criticized the lawmakers for aligning themselves with Wike in what he described as a scheme driven by personal and political interests rather than the will of the people.

Undermining Democracy and the Rule of Law

Ikenga expressed frustration at the ongoing efforts to impeach Governor Fubara, despite a Federal High Court ruling that should have settled the matter. He condemned the persistence of the pro-Wike lawmakers, accusing them of resorting to "backdoor politicking" to achieve what they had failed to secure through legal avenues.

"Now that it’s clear that impeaching Fubara is impossible, they claim to still be in PDP," Ikenga said, denouncing what he described as opportunistic and dishonest tactics.

A Warning for Democratic Governance

In his critique, Ikenga warned that such actions threaten the foundations of democracy in Rivers State and beyond. He emphasized that when lawmakers prioritize personal and political gains over the rule of law, it sets a dangerous precedent that could erode public trust in the democratic process.

Ikenga’s remarks underscore the high-stakes nature of the political struggle in Rivers State, where the ongoing power tussle between Governor Fubara and pro-Wike factions could have far-reaching consequences for governance and political stability. He called on all stakeholders to respect the court's ruling and uphold democratic principles, warning that continued disregard for the rule of law could lead to further political instability in the state.
