Former Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State, Samuel Nwanosike, has strongly refuted claims that the Supreme Court ordered the conduct of local government elections in Rivers State within three months. In an exclusive interview with TVC News, Nwanosike labeled the assertion as “a big lie and a deceit to the people of Nigeria,” while expressing disappointment in those spreading such misinformation, particularly well-regarded leaders.

No Election Mandate in Supreme Court Ruling

Nwanosike, who personally attended the Supreme Court proceedings, clarified that no such order was issued in the ruling delivered on July 11, 2024. “I was seated in court on that day,” Nwanosike emphasized, highlighting that he had attended all the hearings related to the case. He pointed out that those making such claims were deliberately misleading the public.

He called on the public to verify the facts, noting that a certified copy of the judgement was available in the TVC News studio, and it contained no reference to a requirement for local government elections to be conducted within three months. “There was nothing like that in the copy with you in your studio,” he reiterated, urging people to rely on the facts rather than rumors.

Rising Political Tensions in Rivers State

Nwanosike’s remarks come against the backdrop of increasing political tensions in Rivers State, where discussions surrounding local government elections have been at the forefront of public discourse. These debates have been further complicated by the roles of key political figures, including the current Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

A Call for Responsible Leadership

Expressing his frustration, Nwanosike condemned the spreading of false information, particularly by leaders held in high esteem. “It’s a big lie and deceit to the people of Nigeria, and it’s shameful when respected leaders make such statements,” he remarked. Nwanosike stressed that responsible leadership requires clarity and honesty, especially when addressing sensitive legal matters that can mislead the public.

In conclusion, he firmly stated that the Supreme Court ruling contained no mention of a mandated election timeline, calling on all parties to engage responsibly in political discourse.
