A devastating petrol tanker explosion in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State has claimed the lives of at least 90 people, with another 50 injured. The tragedy occurred late Tuesday night, leading to widespread grief and shock in the region.
The Explosion
According to Mr. Shi’isu Adam, the Police Public Relations Officer in Jigawa State, the incident happened at approximately 11:30 p.m. near Khadija University in Majiya Town. A tanker driver, transporting fuel from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control of the vehicle, which led to a catastrophic explosion.
Adam confirmed the details in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), stating, "The tanker driver lost control near the university, resulting in an explosion that has now claimed the lives of 90 individuals."
Cause of Casualties
The police spokesperson expressed concerns about the tendency of people to gather at accident scenes, despite repeated warnings from authorities about the dangers. "Despite police warnings to stay clear of fuel tanker accidents, people still gathered around the scene, which is why there was such a high casualty rate," Adam explained.
Response and Ongoing Medical Care
In response to the tragic event, a mass burial for the victims was scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, those injured in the explosion, many suffering from severe burns and trauma, have been receiving medical care at Ringim General Hospital.
