Minister Wike Acknowledges Patience Jonathan’s Support

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has clarified his political relationship with former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan. During an interview on Channels TV's Politics Today, Wike expressed gratitude for Patience Jonathan's support but firmly stated that the former First Family did not "make him politically."

Wike praised the former First Lady for her backing during his political career but underscored his own efforts in establishing his political identity. “It would be unfair before the Almighty God to say that Patience Jonathan never supported me,” Wike said, highlighting that he could never deny the contributions she made to his political journey.

Recognition of Goodluck Jonathan’s Role in His Career

While acknowledging Patience Jonathan’s support, Wike also reflected on the role of former President Goodluck Jonathan in his political rise. He particularly lauded Jonathan for appointing him Minister of State for Education from July 2011 to April 2014. This appointment marked a significant milestone in his political career, positioning him as a key player on the national stage.

However, Wike was quick to clarify that, while grateful for the opportunity, he did not attribute his political success solely to Jonathan's influence. His remarks emphasized his belief that his political trajectory was shaped by his own dedication, efforts, and strategic moves.

A Self-Made Political Leader

Wike’s comments suggest a desire to correct any misperceptions about his political career being entirely dependent on the Jonathans. By stressing his self-made status, the FCT Minister seeks to position himself as a leader who has worked hard to achieve his goals, with or without the backing of powerful figures.

The narrative of being politically “made” by others is one Wike firmly rejects. Instead, he portrays himself as an independent politician who, while acknowledging the support of key figures, has largely relied on his abilities and perseverance to rise to prominence.

A Balanced Perspective on Political Support

Wike’s statements illustrate a careful balance between showing gratitude for the support he received from the Jonathans and asserting his independence as a political actor. He ensures that his appreciation for their contributions does not overshadow his own achievements, reaffirming his autonomy in the political sphere.

In doing so, Wike reinforces the idea that, while political alliances and backing are important, they do not define a leader’s success. His career, according to his narrative, has been shaped by more than just the influence of prominent figures, but by his personal efforts and determination.

This positioning may serve Wike well as he continues to navigate Nigeria’s complex political landscape, where the ability to stand on one’s own is often seen as a critical trait for leadership.
