In the midst of escalating political tensions in Rivers State, Ene Obi, former Country Director of ActionAid, has called on Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, to reassess his actions. According to Obi, decisions made by Wike are contributing to hardships for the people of Rivers State, impacting both local governance and citizen welfare.
Obi Calls for Respect Toward Rivers State Governor
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time program, Obi emphasized the importance of respecting the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, whom Wike had previously supported. While Wike has referred to Fubara as “not a small boy,” Obi argues that his recent actions suggest a lack of genuine respect. She highlighted how Fubara, in his commitment to governance, expressed that despite financial limitations imposed by recent developments, his priority remains the welfare of the state.
“One of the things I heard from the governor was that even when the court injunction came out, he said, ‘I’m focused on governance,’” Obi recounted, underscoring the governor’s dedication in the face of challenging circumstances.
Criticism of Wike’s Priorities as FCT Minister
Obi further criticized Wike's priorities in his role as FCT Minister, specifically his recent initiative to provide housing for judges. She questioned the necessity of such a project when Nigerian workers, including judges, already have housing allowances. Obi speculated that the initiative could be a strategic move to influence future elections, particularly the 2027 general election.
“Why does the minister want to build houses for judges? Are they not like other workers who receive housing allowances? Is this an attempt to ‘pocket’ the judiciary?” she questioned, calling attention to potential political motives behind Wike’s actions.
A Plea for Wike to Reflect on the Impact of His Decisions
Obi also addressed Wike’s shifting political stance, noting his transition from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to aligning with the All Progressives Congress (APC) after being appointed as a minister. She expressed disappointment in Wike’s recent actions, noting that many are suffering as a result of his decisions.
“I am using this medium to call on the Minister of the FCT. Women, children, and the people of Rivers are suffering. Nigeria is suffering because of these decisions,” Obi stated.
Rivers State Belongs to Its People, Not to Political Interests
In her closing remarks, Obi reminded Wike that Rivers State belongs to the people, urging him to show greater respect for Fubara and prioritize the well-being of the state over political rivalries. “Rivers belongs to its people, and future generations will hold today’s leaders accountable. Wike needs to return to the roots of his service, reflect on his actions, and focus on what’s best for the people,” she concluded.
With these comments, Obi has joined a growing number of voices urging for a shift in political focus in Rivers State, advocating for responsible leadership and prioritizing the welfare of the people over political ambitions.
