Gover nor Fubara Addresses Defection of 27 Lawmakers to APC
In a recent video shared by Symfoni TV, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara commented on the defection of Martin Amaewhule and 27 other members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Governor addressed the political implications of their departure, highlighting its impact on both the state legislature and his administration's focus.
A Grave Mistake by the Lawmakers
Governor Fubara expressed his belief that the lawmakers made a significant miscalculation by joining the APC, which ultimately led to their removal from their legislative positions. Initially, he considered extending support to the defected lawmakers but later decided against it upon observing their actions and motivations.
"We all know what happened when they [the lawmakers] crossed over. It was perhaps an act of fate that they made such a mistake," Fubara noted, underscoring his belief that this decision was a misguided one on their part.
Moving Beyond the 2024 Budget
Governor Fubara affirmed that he will not present the state's 2024 budget to the assembly led by Amaewhule, signifying his intention to move forward with his administration's agenda. He stated that this decision confirms that the defected lawmakers no longer hold legitimate positions within the state legislature.
"We’ve already begun work on the 2025 budget, focusing on the future rather than those who no longer represent the people," he declared, indicating a shift toward long-term planning and development.
Declaration of Vacant Seats: A Stand for Accountability
Fubara highlighted the legal action taken against the defected lawmakers, pointing to the official declaration of their seats as vacant—a move that took place in December 2023. He emphasized that he would not reverse this decision, which serves as a strong message of accountability.
"They thought they were clever, but the vacant seat declaration is what will ultimately return them to their villages," he added, noting that he is firmly focused on preparing the state's 2025 budget rather than accommodating those who defected.
Priorities for the 2025 Budget: Education, Healthcare, and Agriculture
Governor Fubara outlined his key priorities for the upcoming 2025 budget, including major investments in education, healthcare, and agriculture. He emphasized the need to enhance public schools and healthcare facilities, ensuring that quality resources are available to all citizens.
"Our children deserve quality education, and if they cannot attend private schools, let them go to public schools that meet high standards," he explained. Additionally, the Governor noted the importance of good health and infrastructure, underscoring his commitment to building roads, primary health centers, and hospitals.
A Forward-Focused Approach for Rivers State
Governor Fubara concluded his remarks by reiterating his focus on the future. With the 2025 budget already in progress, he expressed confidence in the state’s direction and reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Rivers State with a focus on essential services and development.
In his closing message, Fubara stated, "Let those who are no longer part of our mission hear this wherever they are—our focus is on building a strong and sustainable future for Rivers State
