Governor Seyi Makinde's Call for Change

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called on Nigerians to reject the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections, accusing the party of failing the nation. He cited widespread hardship, rising inflation, and governance failures as reasons for this urgent appeal. Speaking at the inauguration of the new ultra-modern Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Southwest zonal secretariat in Ibadan on November 2, 2024, Makinde emphasized the need for decisive action to steer Nigeria away from the challenges created by APC leadership.

APC's Failure to Meet Nigerians' Aspirations

Makinde pointedly criticized the APC for its inability to deliver on promises made to the Nigerian people, noting that the party has betrayed the collective aspirations of Nigerians. According to the governor, “The APC has been at the helm of affairs in this country, and they have woefully failed us. The people of Nigeria must now decide whether to retain them in power or vote them out.” He highlighted how the party's policies have led to inflation, economic hardship, and an erosion of citizens' rights.

Human Rights Violations and Economic Mismanagement

In his remarks, Makinde accused the APC of committing serious violations of human rights, including detaining minors who protested against the government and showing disregard for the rule of law. The governor also pointed out the unprecedented inflation rate, which he argues has left Nigerians struggling to afford basic necessities. "Nigerians are suffering, and there must be an end to it. We need to unite and push for change," he asserted, stressing that the coming elections represent an opportunity for the people to make their voices heard against these injustices.

Makinde Calls for Unity Within PDP

Amid growing internal challenges in the PDP, Makinde urged party members to work together to heal divisions and maintain unity in the Southwest. He cautioned that the party’s real challenges come from within rather than external opposition. "The enemies of the party are within, not the opposition parties,” he said, calling on the PDP leadership to act decisively to foster cohesion. “We must not allow the ruling party to disrupt the peace we have worked hard to create,” he added.

Potential Presidential Aspirations

When asked about his potential ambitions for the presidency, Makinde addressed the speculation, stating that he is fully capable of making his own decisions. “I am old enough to make my own decisions about contesting or not. The current realities in the country will guide my choices,” he explained, suggesting that his future role in Nigerian politics will depend on what he believes will best serve the interests of the people.

2027: A Decisive Year for Nigeria

In his concluding remarks, Makinde emphasized that the 2027 election is not simply a contest between the PDP and APC, but a choice for Nigerians to reject the status quo. He expressed confidence that Nigerians will rise to the occasion, demanding accountability and a government that prioritizes their well-being
