In a significant political development, President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This re-election, marking the beginning of another one-year tenure, was formalized during the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Upon his re-election, President Tinubu expressed his gratitude and commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities with utmost dedication. He emphasized the importance of continued efforts towards regional stability and cooperation.

As his first major act following his re-election, President Tinubu appointed President Bassirou Faye of Senegal as the Special Envoy of the ECOWAS Commission. President Faye’s mandate is to engage in diplomatic mediation with the leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, countries that announced their exit from ECOWAS earlier this year. This appointment underscores the pressing need for dialogue and reconciliation within the West African region.

In a statement, President Tinubu explained the critical role that President Faye and Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, will play in this diplomatic mission. “Having a new mandate, I will request Faye of Senegal to please become our special envoy alongside Tuggur, to do a round-the-clock work with our brothers in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, and coordinate with me, if necessary, and with the commission,” he said.

The re-election of President Tinubu and his strategic appointment of President Faye signify a proactive approach to addressing the complex political and security challenges facing the region. By entrusting these key figures with the task of mediation, ECOWAS aims to foster dialogue, resolve conflicts, and reinforce regional unity.
