Ongoing Tremors Cause Panic in Mpape

Residents of Mpape in Bwari Area Council, Abuja, have been thrown into a state of panic following continuous tremors and vibrations experienced in parts of the area. Over the last five days, locals have reported unusual seismic activity, raising concerns about the safety of the community.

Dr. Ebenezer Adebisi, Chairman of the Mpape Hills Landlord Association and a retired Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), disclosed these developments in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday. He confirmed that the vibrations have become more persistent in recent days, causing alarm among residents.

Not the First Incident, But More Intense

Dr. Adebisi noted that while Mpape residents have experienced similar tremors in the past, particularly due to the activities of quarry companies in the area, the recent vibrations feel more intense. "This is not the first time we've had such an experience," he said, "but the tremors in the past five days have been far more consistent and intense."

He added that the vibrations, which were particularly severe throughout Sunday and Monday night, differ from those typically felt during rock blasting by quarry companies in the region. The tremors have extended beyond Mpape, with residents in neighboring areas such as Gwarinpa and Katampe also reporting similar experiences.

Calls for Government Intervention

Dr. Adebisi urged the Nigerian government and relevant agencies, particularly the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), to investigate and address the situation. "We are calling on the government and the NGSA to come to the aid of residents. Immediate action is required before the situation worsens," he said. He emphasized the importance of providing guidance to the community on the next steps to take in light of the ongoing tremors.

Widespread Concerns Among Residents

Other residents have also expressed their fears. Mrs. Florence Ilesanmi, a resident of Gwari Village in Mpape, confirmed experiencing similar vibrations. Likewise, Madam Aisha Lawal, who lives in the Crushrock area of Mpape, described the recurring intervals of the tremors as a source of deep concern.

Geological Survey Agency Advises Precautionary Measures

An official from the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, recommended that residents consider relocating temporarily if the tremors persist. The official urged locals to keep a record of the frequency and intensity of the vibrations and assured that the agency is closely monitoring the situation.

"I contacted the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, and they advised that we record the occurrences of the vibrations," said one resident. "The agency has assured us that all their equipment is in place to prevent any potential emergency. They also advised that if the vibrations become too strong, we should evacuate for our safety."

Urgent Action Required

With the ongoing seismic activity causing widespread anxiety, the residents of Mpape and surrounding areas are awaiting an official response from the government. Many are calling for swift action and clear communication to ensure the safety of all those affected.
