Federal Government Denies LGBTQ Agreement Allegations, to Sue Daily Trust for Defamation

The Federal Government has strongly refuted claims that it signed the Samoa Agreement to promote LGBTQ rights, calling the report misleading and a threat to national harmony.

Addressing the press in Abuja on Saturday, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris condemned the Daily Trust Media report as defamatory and baseless. He asserted that the government would take legal action to seek redress for the defamation.

"The report by Daily Trust is not only despicable but also malicious," Idris stated. "There is no LGBTQ-related agreement within the documents signed by the Federal Government."

Idris criticized Daily Trust for its lack of evidence to support its claims, noting that a thorough review of the signed documents revealed no provisions or commitments regarding LGBTQ rights.

In addition to pursuing legal action, the Federal Government plans to file a formal complaint with the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) Ombudsman, accusing Daily Trust of irresponsible journalism.

"The Samoa Agreement, signed at the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) Secretariat in Brussels, Belgium, is fully in line with Nigeria’s interests and contains no controversial clauses about LGBTQ rights," Idris affirmed.

The government's firm stance underscores its commitment to protecting its reputation and maintaining national peace.
