On Friday, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced the suspension of the Warri-Itakpe rail service after a train derailed on Thursday. The incident occurred while the train was en route from Itakpe in Kogi State to Ujevwu in Delta State at approximately 7:15 PM.

Ediri Oyibo, a digital strategist who was aboard the train during the derailment, shared his experience with The Cable. Oyibo, a regular user of the train service, recounted that the train exhibited instability at various points along its route.

"As a frequent user of the train service, riding on the train from Ujevwu to Itakpe on Wednesday, 3rd of July 2024, I practically had my heart between my teeth when the train wobbled along its track at several locations; one, on top of a valley crossing," Oyibo stated. He added, "Riding on the train, something told me the Warri-Itakpe train service is a disaster waiting to happen. A derailment on top of a valley crossing will spell doom."

Oyibo also mentioned that passengers had reported an incident earlier in the journey where the train overshot a station due to brake failure.

Another passenger, Taribio Walson-Oweifawari, a broadcast journalist, described the harrowing experience on social media. "My coach is VIP and it is Coach 1. The coach immediately after ours was Coach 2 and it derailed. Hai!!! I just kept shouting Jesus when it looked like ours was going to tumble. Just a little bit more, that coach would have fallen off the high point, and taking our coach with it," she wrote in a Facebook post.

In response to the incident, the NRC promptly suspended train operations on the Warri-Itakpe route. In a statement released on Friday morning, the NRC explained the decision: "Due to an unexpected fault, train operations are suspended for today. We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding."

This derailment is not the first incident to affect the Warri-Itakpe rail line. Last year, the NRC suspended operations on the same route after a train derailed at kilometer 30 on the Ajaokuta-Itakpe section of the track. More recently, in May, a train traveling from Kaduna to Abuja derailed in Jere.

The Warri-Itakpe rail line, which serves as a crucial transportation link between Kogi and Delta States, has faced numerous operational challenges since its inception. These incidents highlight ongoing concerns about the safety and reliability of the rail service.

The NRC's decision to suspend operations is aimed at addressing the immediate safety concerns raised by the latest derailment. However, it underscores the need for a comprehensive review of the rail service's infrastructure and operational protocols to prevent future occurrences.

Passengers who rely on the Warri-Itakpe rail service are understandably concerned about the recent incidents. The suspension of service disrupts travel plans and raises questions about the long-term viability of the rail line.

Moving forward, the NRC must take decisive action to restore confidence in the Warri-Itakpe rail service. This includes conducting thorough investigations into the causes of the derailments, implementing necessary safety improvements, and ensuring transparent communication with the public.

The Nigerian government, in collaboration with the NRC, should prioritize investment in railway infrastructure to enhance the safety and reliability of train services nationwide. By addressing the root causes of these incidents and investing in modern, robust infrastructure, the NRC can work towards providing a safer and more dependable rail service for its passengers.

In conclusion, the suspension of the Warri-Itakpe rail service following Thursday's derailment highlights significant challenges within Nigeria's railway system. The NRC's swift response to suspend operations is a necessary step to ensure passenger safety. However, long-term solutions are required to address the underlying issues and restore public confidence in the nation's rail services.
