In a significant political development, a group of former National Assembly members from Rivers State have publicly declared their support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the ongoing political confrontation with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The ex-lawmakers, through a communique, called upon the state's political leaders to prioritize peace and the rule of law. The group, which includes notable figures such as Senator John Azuta Mbata and Senator Ngoji Denton West, emphasized the urgent need to address the escalating tension threatening the state's peace and progress.

During a media briefing in Port Harcourt, former House of Representatives member Bernard Mikko articulated the group's position. Mikko read the communique, which firmly opposed calls for a state of emergency and any actions that undermine the constitutional tenure of elected council chairmen.

"Regardless of our political affiliations, we stand united in our unwavering belief and conviction that the unity, peace, and progress of Rivers State are paramount and non-negotiable," Mikko stated. He underscored the group's absolute commitment to the rule of law, describing it as a cornerstone of democracy that ensures justice, equality, and accountability.

Mikko further highlighted the importance of respecting the tenure of local government councils as stipulated by the constitution. He expressed confidence in the state's ability to address its challenges without resorting to extreme measures such as a state of emergency. "We believe that the calls for a state of emergency are unwarranted and have every confidence in the government’s ability to address any challenges that may arise. We trust in their capacity to maintain peace and stability in Rivers State," he added.

The former lawmakers also voiced their concerns about the current situation in Rivers State, stressing that remaining silent is no longer an option. "This is one of those times in the life of our beloved state when silence is no longer golden. We cannot, in good conscience, continue to play the ostrich when our hard-earned democracy, including the peace and stability of a state that has been built on the blood of heroes, are threatened," they stated.

The group expressed deep concern over the anxiety and hysteria prevailing in the state. They acknowledged that the peace and stability of Rivers State, a crucial economic hub in Nigeria, are under severe threat. Mikko emphasized the need for all stakeholders to work together to preserve the state's tranquility and prevent any further deterioration of the situation.

Governor Fubara's efforts to foster peace and development were commended by the former legislators, who urged all political actors to collaborate in maintaining the state's stability. They reiterated their stance that no individual or group should be above the law, reaffirming their dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that justice is served.

In conclusion, the former National Assembly members from Rivers State have taken a clear stand in support of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. They have called for peace, respect for the rule of law, and the preservation of constitutional governance as the state navigates through its current political challenges. Their intervention underscores the gravity of the situation and the collective responsibility of all political leaders to safeguard the future of Rivers State.
