Dino Melaye Alleges Key PDP Figures Have Irredeemably Damaged the Party

Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has leveled serious accusations against key figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming that they have irreparably damaged the party. In a statement released on Saturday, Melaye specifically called out the acting National Chairman, Iliya Damagum, the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and the National Organizing Secretary, Umar Bature, as being primarily responsible for the alleged destruction of the party.

Melaye, who has been a vocal member of the PDP, made these claims in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where he suggested that the actions of these individuals have led to the commercialization and privatization of the party. He implied that their influence has left the PDP in a state beyond recovery, a sentiment he summed up by stating, "End of the road for PDP as Damagum, Bature, and Anyanwu irredeemably destroyed the party. We will talk about the commercialization and privatization of PDP. PDP is now once upon a time."

The former lawmaker’s comments come amid growing concerns within the PDP over the direction the party is heading under its current leadership. This discontent has been brewing since reports emerged that the PDP's National Working Committee (NWC) might consider sanctioning Damagum and Anyanwu for allegedly engaging in actions that could be classified as anti-party activities. These allegations center on a controversial letter sent by the NWC to the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, which some party leaders, including members of the National Executive Committee (NEC), have criticized as undermining the party’s unity and integrity.

The letter in question has been the subject of intense debate within the party, with some factions viewing it as a betrayal of the PDP's principles. The growing tension has led to calls for disciplinary action against Damagum and Anyanwu, with some NEC members pushing for their suspension or even removal from office.

Despite the mounting pressure, Damagum has remained defiant. In a public statement made on Thursday, he declared that he would not be intimidated into resigning from his position as acting National Chairman. Addressing the issue at the inauguration of the National Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committees, Damagum dismissed the accusations against him as baseless and warned that attempts to force his resignation would only serve to increase his popularity.

"Let me send a message to everyone talking about Damagum this, Damagum that—I cannot be intimidated," he said. "The more you mention me, the more popular I become."

Damagum’s remarks highlight the deepening divisions within the PDP, as the party struggles to find a path forward in a rapidly changing political landscape. His refusal to step down, coupled with his assertion that the attacks on him are only making him stronger, suggests that the internal strife within the party is far from over.

The situation has sparked widespread concern among party members and supporters, many of whom fear that the ongoing power struggle could further weaken the PDP's chances of reclaiming its former status as Nigeria’s dominant political force. With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the party's ability to present a united front will be crucial in determining its future.

As the PDP grapples with these internal challenges, Dino Melaye’s accusations add another layer of complexity to the party’s already troubled situation. His claims of commercialization and privatization raise serious questions about the integrity of the party’s leadership and the direction in which it is heading. These allegations, if substantiated, could have far-reaching implications not only for the individuals involved but for the PDP as a whole.

The coming days and weeks will likely see further developments in this unfolding drama, as party leaders and members alike navigate the turbulent waters of internal party politics. Whether the PDP can overcome these challenges and emerge stronger remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the road ahead is fraught with difficulties, and the party’s future hangs in the balance.

In the meantime, observers and stakeholders within Nigeria’s political landscape will be closely watching the situation, as the PDP’s handling of these internal disputes could have significant implications for the broader political environment. For now, the party remains in a state of flux, with its leadership under intense scrutiny and its members divided over the best way forward.
