Recent developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have raised concerns about internal discord and potential attempts to unseat Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State. According to sources, a faction of the party, including high-profile leaders and members, has been implicated in efforts to undermine Fubara’s administration.

Chief Edwin Clark, a prominent figure within the PDP, has publicly criticized Umaru Damagum, the party’s national chairman, and Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister and former governor of Rivers State. Clark's allegations suggest that these individuals, along with other influential members of the party, have been collaborating to destabilize the leadership of Governor Fubara.

The ongoing conflict between Wike and Fubara has reportedly created significant governance challenges in Rivers State. This rift has led to the emergence of two opposing factions within the party’s leadership. Prominent figures such as Chief Bode George, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, and Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo have also been mentioned as participants in this internal strife.

According to a confidential source within the party, there are claims that twelve key party leaders have been actively supporting Wike’s agenda against Governor Fubara. The source detailed the involvement of several senior members, including:

  • Umaru Damagum
  • Bature
  • Anyanwu
  • Koshoedo
  • Okechukwu Daniel, National Auditor
  • Ahmed Mohammed, National Treasurer
  • Ndubisi David, Deputy National Treasurer
  • Amina Arong, National Women Leader
  • Muhammed Suleiman, National Youth Leader
  • National Vice Chairmen of North Central, South East, and North West

The source noted that these individuals have been following Wike’s directives in their opposition to Fubara. During a recent National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, tensions escalated as the faction supporting Wike, led by Damagum, Bature, and Anyanwu, pushed for the continuation of the process aimed at removing Fubara.

In contrast, only a few members, including Ajibade (SAN), Ologunagba, and Woyegikuro, defended the need for the PDP to adhere to a court order in Rivers State. These members argued against the continuation of actions that could further destabilize the party and exacerbate the governance crisis in Rivers State. The division within the party has highlighted a deeper schism between those seeking to align with Wike’s objectives and those advocating for adherence to legal and procedural norms.

As the PDP navigates this internal conflict, the implications for the party’s unity and its governance role in Rivers State remain significant. The ongoing disputes reflect broader challenges facing the party as it strives to reconcile differing interests and maintain cohesion amidst internal divisions
