Baseless Allegations and Treason Charges: A Smokescreen for Stifling Dissent - Abimbola Adelakun

The accusations against the #EndBadGovernance protesters are unsubstantiated and largely based on speculation. The police have failed to provide credible evidence to support their claims of foreign involvement or attempts to orchestrate violence. The arrest of a British citizen, Andrew Wynne, has been sensationalized by authorities, who claim he represents foreign actors meddling in Nigeria’s affairs.

These baseless allegations serve as a smokescreen to distract from the real issue—citizens exercising their democratic right to protest against a government that has failed to address their grievances. By labeling peaceful protesters as criminals, the government is attempting to shift the focus away from the economic and political failures that have led to widespread unrest.

Police Justifications and the Lack of Credibility

The credibility of the police and security agencies in Tinubu’s government is questionable. The efficiency with which they have acted against protesters contrasts sharply with their inability to address more pressing issues such as kidnapping, banditry, and widespread insecurity. While they have quickly moved to suppress dissent, they have been ineffective in resolving the numerous crises facing the country.

This selective application of law enforcement only deepens the public’s mistrust of the government. The fact that individuals are being charged with treason for holding placards and protesting peacefully raises serious concerns about the integrity of the justice system under Tinubu’s leadership.

A Nation in Crisis: Protests, Arrests, and Economic Hardship

The unrest in Nigeria is a direct result of the economic hardship and political instability facing the country. Inflation is at an all-time high, the cost of living is unbearable, and basic necessities are increasingly out of reach for the average citizen. The “renewed hope” that Tinubu promised during his campaign has quickly dissipated, leaving a nation struggling to survive.

Rather than addressing the root causes of these issues, the government is preemptively arresting citizens who dare to express their dissatisfaction. This approach is only likely to fuel further unrest as more people take to the streets in frustration.

The Right to Protest vs. Treason: A Dangerous Precedent

Charging protesters with treason sets a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy. The right to peaceful protest is enshrined in the constitution, yet Tinubu’s government is criminalizing this fundamental right. By equating dissent with treason, the government is sending a clear message: any opposition will be met with severe consequences.

This erosion of democratic freedoms threatens the very fabric of Nigeria’s political system. If citizens cannot voice their concerns without fear of persecution, the country risks sliding further into authoritarianism.

Tinubu’s Regime: Preemptive Arrests and Failing Leadership

Tinubu’s government is increasingly resorting to preemptive arrests as a means of control. By targeting protesters before they can organize, the administration hopes to deter further demonstrations. However, this strategy reveals a deeper failure of leadership—the inability to engage with citizens and address their legitimate concerns.

Rather than repressing dissent, a responsible government would engage in dialogue and seek solutions to the issues driving the protests. Tinubu’s administration, however, appears more interested in consolidating power than in solving the country’s pressing problems.

The Road Ahead: Will Tinubu’s Government Face Its Own Undoing?

If history is any guide, Tinubu’s government may ultimately face the same fate as Abacha’s regime. The oppressive tactics currently being employed may offer temporary control, but they cannot silence the growing discontent among Nigerians. The lessons of history are clear: governments that fail to address the needs of their people are doomed to collapse.

As protests continue to spread and the economic situation worsens, Tinubu’s administration may find itself confronting its own undoing. The question remains: will Tinubu learn from history and change course, or will his government follow in the footsteps of the very dictatorship he once fought against? Only time will tell
