FG Addresses Concerns Over Recent Earth Tremors in FCT

In response to the recent earth tremors that have unsettled parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), has provided clarity and reassurance to residents. The NGSA, in a statement issued by its Director-General, Professor Olusegun Ige, confirmed that the tremors pose no significant threat to life or property.

Government's Monitoring of Earth Tremors

Professor Ige disclosed that the NGSA has been closely monitoring the tremors since Friday, September 13, 2024. According to him, a total of 48 seismic events have been recorded, with both the intensity and frequency increasing noticeably between September 13 and 16.

“Our monitoring data shows a pattern of rising seismic activity during this period, with the number of recorded events escalating each day,” Professor Ige stated.

Analysis of Seismic Activity

The NGSA's preliminary analysis indicates that the source of the tremors is within 5 kilometers of the monitoring station, specifically around the Mpape axis. The tremors are believed to be caused by accumulated stress along identified fault lines, leading to the release of seismic energy. Multiple epicentres have been detected, predominantly in the northeast of the NGSA-5 Seismic Station near Mpape.

Professor Ige further explained that the intensity of the tremors falls within a range of III to IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale, which classifies the tremors as weak to light. "While noticeable, these tremors pose a very low-level threat to the affected areas," he reassured.

On-the-Spot Assessments and Findings

The NGSA team conducted on-the-ground assessments in the affected areas, gathering insights from local residents. These observations, combined with earlier geophysical data, have led to the conclusion that the tremors are a natural result of stress release along faults in the region.

“There are several epicentres related to the recent seismic activity, with most of them located northeast of Mpape and a few southwest near Katampe. This distribution aligns with the geological fault lines we have identified,” the statement reads.

What Residents Need to Know

Despite the ongoing tremors, Professor Ige urged residents in Mpape, Katampe, Maitama, and other affected areas not to panic. The NGSA continues to monitor the situation closely and is confident that the tremors pose minimal risk.

“The Agency will continue to provide updates as necessary, and our seismic stations are being monitored in real-time to ensure timely alerts on any significant developments,” Professor Ige assured.

Residents are advised to remain calm and stay informed, as the government continues its efforts to ensure public safety and provide accurate information about seismic activity in the region.

Conclusion: Vigilance and Preparedness

The NGSA’s commitment to ongoing monitoring and assessment serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in understanding seismic risks. While the recent tremors are of low intensity, the agency’s proactive approach reflects the government's dedication to keeping the public informed and safe.

The general public is encouraged to follow updates from the NGSA and other relevant authorities as the situation develops
