Former Nigerian Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has voiced serious concerns regarding the escalating economic hardship facing the nation. Describing the situation as "getting out of control," Abubakar expressed dismay at the struggles many Nigerians face in meeting their basic needs.

Visit from Human Rights Group Highlights National Struggles

The retired general shared his thoughts during a meeting with the leadership of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, led by Abdullahi Mohammed Jabi, at his residence in Minna, Niger State. The visit, which took place on Tuesday, was an opportunity for the elder statesman to reflect on the dire economic conditions currently affecting millions of Nigerians.

Widespread Economic Strain on Nigerians

Abubakar emphasized the severe challenges that have left many citizens unable to afford necessities such as food and transportation. "Everybody is crying about this hardship, and it seems to be getting out of control. People cannot afford three square meals," he remarked. He further highlighted the ripple effects of rising costs, particularly in fuel prices and school fees, stating, "The issue of transportation, the hike in fuel, the hike in school fees for the children, and the lack of funds in everybody’s pocket is making life difficult for everybody."

Recommendations for Addressing the Economic Crisis

In an effort to find solutions, Abubakar revealed that he is part of a forum that has presented three key recommendations to the federal government. He stressed that simply distributing palliatives would not provide a sustainable solution to the ongoing hikes in the prices of food and other essential commodities. Instead, he advocated for a more proactive approach, suggesting that the government take immediate steps to make food more affordable by intervening directly in the market.

"There is a need for the government to flood and saturate the communities with food," he advised. "Let them [the government] buy food and sell it at lesser prices to the people so that people will be able to afford some of these items based on their pockets and income."

Appeal for Peaceful Protests

As the country braces for the #EndBadGovernance protests planned for October 1, Abubakar urged Nigerians to remain peaceful in their demonstrations. Recalling the violence that marred previous protests, he expressed deep regret over the looting and criminal activities that occurred, stating, "During the last protest, we witnessed unnecessary and uncalled-for carnage, theft, and criminalities. Instead of protesting peacefully, people resorted to looting even private homes; private individuals suffered at the hands of the demonstrators."

Call for Government Action on Hardship

Earlier in the meeting, the leader of the visiting delegation, Abdullahi Jabi, conveyed the group’s well-wishes to Gen. Abubakar on the occasion of his birthday, praying for his continued health and longevity. He also took the opportunity to appeal for the general’s influence in urging the federal government to address the widespread issues of hardship and hunger, while soliciting his support for the implementation of various social welfare programs.

In conclusion, General Abdulsalami's candid remarks reflect the growing anxiety surrounding Nigeria's economic difficulties, underscoring the need for urgent and strategic government interventions to alleviate the suffering of its citizens.
