Hon. John Alla Speaks on the 2024 World Tourism Day: Tourism and Peace

September 27, 2024
Distinguished guests, esteemed colleagues, ladies and gentlemen,

It is a great honor to stand before you today as we gather to celebrate the 2024 World Tourism Day, under the theme “Tourism and Peace.” This year’s theme could not be more fitting as we reflect on the transformative power of tourism in building bridges across cultures, promoting understanding, and fostering peace, especially in regions such as ours, Bayelsa State.

Governor Douye Diri’s Commitment to Tourism Development in Bayelsa State

I must begin by expressing my deepest gratitude to His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri, for his unwavering commitment to developing Bayelsa’s tourism sector. The governor has consistently demonstrated his vision for Bayelsa’s economic diversification, and tourism is at the forefront of this agenda. By investing in infrastructure, promoting our unique cultural and natural sites, and ensuring a peaceful and secure environment, His Excellency has laid the foundation for our state to become a beacon for domestic and international tourists.

Governor Diri recognizes that Bayelsa State is rich with untapped potential. Our natural beauty, historical sites, and vibrant cultural heritage offer a unique opportunity to attract tourists from all over the world. Under his leadership, we are making impressive strides toward transforming Bayelsa into a prime tourism destination.

Tourism Attractions in Bayelsa State

Our state is home to some of Nigeria’s most breathtaking natural landscapes and culturally significant landmarks. Among the most notable is the majestic Akassa Lighthouse, the tallest in West Africa, which stands as a proud reminder of our maritime history. It draws tourists who are eager to learn about our past and explore the heritage that shapes our identity today.

Other remarkable attractions include the serene beaches of Okpoama and Agge, as well as the tranquil Ox-Bow Lake and Lake Efi, all of which are perfect for eco-tourism and recreational activities. The historical “White Man’s Grave,” a poignant reminder of our colonial history, stands as another landmark of profound historical significance, inviting visitors to engage with our past.

Koloama Beach is yet another gem in our state’s natural heritage, offering pristine coastal beauty that rivals any destination in the world. It is a place where international tourists can experience the untouched beauty of nature, and we are committed to promoting these wonders to a global audience.

The Economic Impact of Tourism on Peacebuilding

Tourism, ladies and gentlemen, is more than just an economic activity. It is a powerful tool for peacebuilding. As people travel, they bring with them not only their economic contributions but also opportunities for cultural exchange. In this way, tourism fosters mutual respect and understanding between different peoples, helping to bridge divides and create a more harmonious society.

In Bayelsa, tourism has the potential to unite our diverse ethnic groups by highlighting the cultural heritage that we all share. When we showcase our history, traditions, and natural wonders, we create a shared sense of pride, and this can strengthen the bonds of peace and unity in our state. Additionally, tourism provides livelihoods for local communities, addressing some of the root causes of conflict by reducing poverty and fostering inclusive economic growth.

Tourism’s Role in Developing Nations

Looking beyond Bayelsa, tourism plays an essential role in the economic development of many countries around the world, particularly in developing nations like ours. Tourism creates jobs, generates revenue, and promotes a positive image of a country on the global stage.

For many developing nations, tourism serves as a lifeline, enabling them to build infrastructure, attract foreign investment, and foster international goodwill. With the right investment in security, infrastructure, and promotion, Bayelsa’s tourism industry has the potential to rival that of some of Africa’s most renowned destinations, like Kenya or South Africa.

Peace and Security: The Foundation for Tourism Growth

However, none of this would be possible without peace and security. We must recognize that a stable and secure environment is the cornerstone of any successful tourism industry. Here in Bayelsa, under the steadfast leadership of Governor Douye Diri, we have made great strides in ensuring that our state remains safe and welcoming for tourists from all corners of the globe.

Without peace, the beauty of our state would go unseen, and the economic benefits of tourism would remain untapped. I commend Governor Diri for his efforts in maintaining peace and security throughout the state, ensuring that Bayelsa is a destination where tourists feel safe and at ease.

The security measures implemented by the governor’s administration have created an environment in which tourism can thrive, bringing with it prosperity, development, and greater cultural understanding. This peace and stability are not only vital for tourism but also for the overall well-being of our communities.

Conclusion

In conclusion, today’s celebration of World Tourism Day is a reminder of the profound connection between tourism and peace. Tourism has the power to bring people together, to promote understanding, and to drive economic growth—all of which contribute to long-lasting peace.

Here in Bayelsa, through the vision and leadership of Governor Douye Diri, we are working hard to ensure that our state remains a peaceful and prosperous destination for tourists. As we continue on this path, I call on all stakeholders—government officials, private sector partners, and the people of Bayelsa—to join hands in supporting the growth of our tourism sector.

Together, we can harness the power of tourism to build a better, more peaceful future for our state, our nation, and our world.

Thank you
