In a recent interview with News Central TV, Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, delivered sharp criticism of President Bola Tinubu's government. Obi expressed deep concern over the administration’s indulgence in what he termed wasteful spending, especially in the face of growing poverty and economic hardship affecting millions of Nigerians.

Extravagant Spending in the Face of Crisis

Obi lamented the current state of the country, highlighting that approximately 38 million Nigerians are on the brink of extreme hunger. According to Obi, the government's financial mismanagement and lavish expenditures have further aggravated the nation’s economic woes.

He cited specific instances of what he described as excessive spending, including the purchase of a new presidential jet for $100 million, ₦21 billion for renovating the vice president’s lodge, and ₦15 billion allocated for the construction of a National Assembly clinic. Obi emphasized the disparity between the government’s lavish spending and the harsh realities faced by ordinary Nigerians, stating, "You cannot ask people to fast while you are feasting."

Urging the Government to Prioritize Key Development Areas

Obi called on the Federal Government to redirect its focus and resources toward addressing critical sectors such as health, education, poverty alleviation, and security. He highlighted that Nigeria remains the world’s "poverty capital," and the urgent need for policies that directly target human and food insecurity.

"From all records, Nigeria has 38 million people on the verge of extreme hunger. The two most critical areas that are giving us the crisis are human insecurity and food insecurity," Obi noted. He stressed that to tackle these challenges, substantial investments in agriculture are essential. By doing so, the nation could address hunger, unemployment, and inflation simultaneously.

Possible Collaboration with Other Opposition Parties

Looking ahead, Obi hinted at the potential for a political coalition with other opposition parties in an effort to "rescue" Nigerians from the widespread hunger and insecurity. As the 2027 presidential election draws near, Obi suggested that a united front could provide the necessary strength to challenge the current administration and offer a more viable alternative for Nigerians.

In conclusion, Obi’s remarks underline his concern for the worsening economic conditions in Nigeria and his call for a government that is more attuned to the needs of the people, rather than engaging in unnecessary extravagance during a time of crisis
