Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, has announced Ibrahim Umar as the newest addition to his media team. Umar will be taking over the role previously held by Yunusa Tanko, who has been appointed as the Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, a global initiative aimed at driving the LP’s vision for a better Nigeria.

This update was conveyed in an official statement released by the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) on Sunday in Abuja. The statement highlighted Umar’s appointment as a critical move in sustaining the momentum of Obi’s campaign and media outreach efforts.

Umar, a seasoned media professional and activist, has been described as a dedicated and passionate member of the Obidient Movement, with a commitment that mirrors the dedication of his predecessor, Tanko. The statement emphasized that Umar is equally driven by the same aspiration for a reformed Nigeria, aligning with the movement's objectives of challenging the status quo and creating a more equitable nation.

The statement from POMR read: “The Peter Obi Media Reach wishes to inform the public, particularly media professionals, of minor changes within its media team. Dr. Yunusa Tanko, who served as the chief spokesperson for the Obi Presidential Campaign, is stepping down from his role to take on new responsibilities. Tanko’s departure marks the beginning of a new chapter as he assumes the position of Interim National Coordinator for the Obidient Movement.”

Tanko’s new role will see him managing the activities of the Obidient Movement at both national and international levels, further advancing the cause of the Labour Party and its objectives. His departure from the media role, however, does not signal a reduction in his commitment to the broader goals of the party and the movement but rather signifies an expansion of his responsibilities.

The statement further elaborated on Umar’s appointment, describing him as a versatile and dedicated individual who has been an active participant in the Obidient Movement. His track record in both media and activism makes him a fitting successor to Tanko. Umar’s drive and hunger for change are seen as key assets in pushing forward the vision of the Labour Party and ensuring that the message of hope for a “New Nigeria” continues to resonate with Nigerians across the country and the diaspora.

“We appeal to members of the public and the media to support and cooperate with these individuals as they undertake their new roles,” the statement continued. “The struggle to dismantle the political structures that have kept Nigeria in its current state is ongoing, and we are confident that, with the collective efforts of all Nigerians, a New Nigeria is indeed possible.”

The appointment of Umar is part of a broader strategic effort by Peter Obi and his team to maintain the relevance and dynamism of the Obidient Movement, which has garnered significant support since its inception. The movement, driven largely by young Nigerians and professionals, has become a potent political force, challenging traditional power structures and advocating for transparency, good governance, and accountability.

The reshuffling within the media team also reflects the LP’s commitment to strengthening its outreach and communication efforts as it continues to build on the momentum generated during the 2023 elections. While the election results did not favor Obi, his campaign ignited a renewed sense of hope among many Nigerians, particularly the youth, who have been disillusioned with the country’s political landscape.

Umar’s appointment signals a fresh chapter in the Labour Party’s journey, as it continues to advocate for political and economic reforms. With the media playing a crucial role in shaping public opinion, Umar’s leadership in this area is expected to be instrumental in keeping the conversation around the LP’s vision alive and ensuring that the party’s message reaches a broader audience.

As the Obidient Movement continues to evolve, both Umar and Tanko are expected to play pivotal roles in steering the organization towards achieving its long-term objectives. The public is urged to lend its support to these leaders as they take on the challenges ahead in the ongoing push for a more just and prosperous Nigeria
