Abduction of Grace and Isa Andrew
Grace Andrew and her father, Isa Andrew, the chaplain of the All Saints Police Protestant Church in Gusau, recently regained their freedom after enduring 49 harrowing days in captivity. The pair was abducted on July 15, 2023, by bandits who stormed their home, marking the beginning of a nightmarish ordeal that would subject them to severe physical and emotional abuse.
Living Conditions in Captivity
Throughout their time in the bandits’ camp, Grace and her father were subjected to cruel treatment, forced to survive in deplorable conditions. The experience was terrifying and psychologically scarring, with threats of violence and constant fear becoming a part of their daily lives. Grace, in particular, faced extreme physical abuse, which left her traumatized.
In a video shared by AIT, Grace recounted the horrors she endured. She revealed that she was kept in chains and beaten frequently by her captors. The abuse was both physical and emotional, as she lived in constant fear of further harm.
Attempted Assault
During the course of her captivity, Grace experienced an especially horrifying incident involving a young boy within the camp. She recalled how the boy attempted to sexually assault her. Her resistance, however, was pivotal in preventing the situation from escalating. Grace screamed for help, and fortunately, her cries were heard by someone who intervened and stopped the assault.
"They (the bandits) chained me and flogged me," Grace stated, recounting the abuse. "A boy tried to sleep with me, but when I screamed and shouted, someone saved me."
The Price of Freedom
After nearly seven weeks of uncertainty and despair, Grace and her father were finally released. However, their freedom came at a great cost to their family. In order to secure their release, the family was forced to sell many of their belongings and borrow money to meet the ransom demands of the kidnappers. The financial strain was significant, but the family made these sacrifices in the hope of bringing their loved ones home safely.
Lingering Trauma
While their release brought immense relief, the emotional and psychological wounds from the ordeal remain. Both Grace and Isa Andrew carry the scars of their 49-day captivity, and the road to recovery, both physically and emotionally, may be long. Their story highlights not only the ongoing issue of insecurity in Nigeria but also the personal toll these kidnappings take on the victims and their families.
Grace's resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to her strength, though the trauma of the experience will likely linger for years to come.
