Oba of Benin Counters Oshiomhole's Statement Before APC Leaders

Tensions rose in Edo State on Sunday as the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, publicly refuted a statement made by former governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, concerning the candidacy of Governor Godwin Obaseki in the 2016 gubernatorial election. The denial came during a visit to the Benin palace, following the All Progressives Congress (APC)'s victory in the most recent gubernatorial election.

Oshiomhole's Apology to the Oba

During the visit, Adams Oshiomhole, who had supported Obaseki's initial candidacy, took the opportunity to address the Oba. Kneeling before the monarch, Oshiomhole expressed regret over his previous decision, admitting he had made a misjudgment in backing Obaseki.

Oshiomhole stated:
“Your Royal Majesty, I would like to apologise for my poor judgement. Despite your advice, I supported Obaseki, believing that as a Benin man, he would respect our traditions. I now realise it was a mistake.”

Oba Ewuare II Refutes Oshiomhole’s Claim

However, in a swift and firm response, the Oba of Benin contradicted Oshiomhole’s version of events. Oba Ewuare II clarified that at no point did he advise against the candidacy of Godwin Obaseki. He emphasized that when Oshiomhole first introduced Obaseki to him in 2016, he had made no negative remarks or recommendations about the future governor.

The monarch firmly stated:
“When you brought Obaseki to me, I did not say anything against him. I want to correct that. I didn’t advise against him when you presented him.”

Witness to the Meeting

To support his claim, Oba Ewuare II pointed to Elemah, a former chairman of the Edo State Board of Internal Revenue and a close associate of Oshiomhole, who was present during the initial introduction. The Oba referenced Elemah as a key witness to the encounter.

The monarch remarked:
“You will recall, this one is your witness when you brought Obaseki to introduce him to me.”

A Dramatic Turn in a Celebratory Setting

This public rebuttal occurred in the presence of prominent figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and APC leader Senator Okpebholo. The exchange added a dramatic twist to what was initially a celebratory occasion, as APC members gathered to celebrate their victory in the recent gubernatorial election.

The encounter has sparked tension and speculation, given the significance of the Oba's position in Edo State and his influence in local politics. The conflicting accounts between Oshiomhole and the Oba may further strain political relations in the region, particularly as both figures have historically played key roles in shaping the political landscape of Edo State.

Conclusion

The Oba of Benin's firm denial of Oshiomhole's claim has stirred political tension in Edo State, creating a sharp contrast to the initial celebratory mood following the APC's electoral success. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this disagreement will impact the broader political dynamics in the state.
