The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as its new Acting National Chairman, replacing Ambassador Illiya Damagum, who was recently suspended by a faction of the party.

Leadership Change Amidst Factional Disputes

The leadership shift follows ongoing internal challenges within the PDP, which culminated in the suspension of Amb. Illiya Damagum from the role of Acting National Chairman. Damagum’s suspension was spearheaded by a faction within the party, reflecting the deepening divisions that have plagued Nigeria's main opposition party in recent times.

Official Confirmation of the Appointment

Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP's National Publicity Secretary, confirmed the development in an official statement. The appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed has been approved by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and takes effect immediately.

In the press release, Ologunagba stated:

“Following the suspension of His Excellency, Amb. Illiya Damagum, as the Acting National Chairman of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Working Committee (NWC) has approved the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the Acting National Chairman.”

Adherence to Constitutional Provisions

The appointment was made in accordance with the provisions of the PDP Constitution, as amended in 2017. The NWC invoked these provisions to ensure a seamless transition in leadership during this critical period for the party.

Ologunagba emphasized that the appointment is intended to maintain stability within the party and ensure the uninterrupted functioning of the PDP’s administrative and political structures.

Call for Unity Ahead of National Executive Committee Meeting

The NWC has urged all party members, including its organs, leaders, and critical stakeholders, to remain focused and united during this period of transition. The committee also confirmed that preparations are underway for the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday.

This leadership change comes at a sensitive time for the PDP, as it seeks to navigate internal conflicts while positioning itself ahead of future political contests in Nigeria.

The new Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed, is expected to play a pivotal role in stabilizing the party and addressing the internal divisions that have emerged in recent months
