Introduction of a New National Anthem

On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) officially launched a sensitization and public enlightenment campaign in Enugu State to promote Nigeria's new national anthem and National Values Charter. This marks the beginning of a nationwide initiative aimed at reintroducing the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” following the signing of the National Anthem Bill 2024 by President Bola Tinubu in May.

Rationale for the Campaign

Mrs. Clara Nwachukwu, the NOA Director in Enugu State, addressed journalists during the launch at the Federal Secretariat, explaining the need for the campaign. She noted that since gaining independence, Nigeria has grappled with issues of national identity, largely due to the country's multilingual, multiethnic, and multi-religious makeup. The new campaign is designed to foster a sense of unity and identity among Nigerians, irrespective of their backgrounds.

According to Nwachukwu, President Tinubu's administration is committed to "building Nigerians to build Nigeria." This goal, she said, is being pursued through a series of sensitization and reorientation campaigns aimed at promoting national values and pride.

Objectives of the National Values Charter

The three-month-long sensitization campaign will educate Nigerians about the new national anthem and the National Values Charter. Nwachukwu explained that the National Values Charter is divided into two key components: The Nigerian Promise and The Citizens Code.

  • The Nigerian Promise represents the commitments made by the Nigerian government through its elected representatives.
  • The Citizens Code outlines the obligations of the citizens towards nation-building.

This "social contract," as Nwachukwu described it, is the cornerstone of a strong and sustainable nation. She emphasized that the values contained in the charter—such as unity, respect, and a shared sense of purpose—are essential for fostering national cohesion and progress.

Reorienting Nigerians Towards Shared Values

Nwachukwu stated that the campaign is not just about raising awareness but is a movement to inspire Nigerians to internalize and live by the values encapsulated in the new anthem and charter. "This movement calls upon each of us as Nigerians to imbibe the shared values and spirit reflected in both our National Anthem and National Values Charter," she said.

She further stressed that achieving the Nigeria of our dreams is only possible through collective commitment to these values, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or social class.

Historical Context and the Search for National Identity

Nwachukwu acknowledged the historical challenges Nigeria has faced in forging a cohesive national identity since its formation in 1914 through the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates. She pointed out that growing ethnic consciousness has complicated this search for a unified national identity. However, the new national anthem and values charter represent a significant step towards overcoming these challenges and building a stronger, more united Nigeria.

In conclusion, the NOA's sensitization campaign aims to reignite national pride and ensure that all Nigerians, from different walks of life, understand their role in fostering unity and contributing to the nation's development
