Recent judicial rulings in Rivers State have stirred intense reactions, sparking concerns among supporters of Governor Sim Fubara and other stakeholders in the state. The fallout has put 27 state lawmakers under the spotlight, with growing fears about the political and social stability of Rivers State.

Governor Fubara Rallies Supporters

In response to the recent court decision, Governor Fubara called on his supporters to stay resilient and steadfast. Addressing them at a rally, he declared, “You need to brace up and be strong. We are still complete and intact.” His remarks aimed to reassure his followers amid widespread criticism of the judgment, which some see as an attempt to destabilize the state.

The judgment has drawn ire from various groups, with many viewing it as a deliberate ploy to weaken Rivers State’s governance and sow discord. Critics argue that such legal decisions could worsen the existing challenges facing the state and its residents.

Concerns Over Judicial Impartiality

Chief Annas Sara-Igbe, a prominent member of the Rivers State Elders Forum and former spokesperson for the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), voiced strong concerns regarding the judicial process. He questioned the neutrality of the judge presiding over the case, citing instances of alleged bias.

“The attitude of the judge from the beginning of this case shows bias, and when a judge shows open bias, it’s very unfortunate,” Sara-Igbe remarked. He highlighted several perceived irregularities, noting that petitions were ignored, requests to change legal representation were denied, and motions were dismissed.

Sara-Igbe expressed hope for a fair hearing in higher courts. “This is not the end of the matter. There is the Court of Appeal; we are going to the Court of Appeal. But very soon, these 27 lawmakers will know where they are. They are dragging themselves into deep trouble.”

Activist Ann Kio Briggs Laments Political Undermining

Ijaw activist and community leader Ann Kio Briggs joined the chorus of criticism, accusing certain individuals of working against the state’s interests. Briggs expressed dismay over what she described as efforts to “cripple” the local government, labeling those involved as “enemies of the state.”

“It is unfortunate that those I call enemies of the state would go to any extent to cripple the state,” Briggs stated. Nevertheless, she expressed optimism that Rivers State would endure despite these challenges. “We will survive despite the court judgment,” she asserted.

A Volatile Political Landscape

The court’s decision has intensified the political tension within Rivers State, impacting the confidence of residents and political figures alike. As the legal battle continues, all eyes are on Governor Fubara and the 27 lawmakers facing potential consequences as they navigate the turbulent political waters
