Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is orchestrating a plot to unseat Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. According to Frank, this effort includes pressure to compel Fubara to join the APC or face removal.
Condemnation of Court Ruling on Rivers State Allocation
Frank strongly condemned a recent Federal High Court ruling that ordered the seizure of Rivers State’s monthly allocations. He described the court’s decision as part of a broader agenda spearheaded by President Tinubu, aimed at either forcing Governor Fubara to switch to the APC or ousting him from office. Frank also questioned the President’s silence on what he called "gross constitutional violations" in Rivers State by the courts and law enforcement.
Allegations of Federal Pressure on Fubara
In his statement from Abuja, Frank claimed that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is acting as a “proxy” for President Tinubu in pressuring Governor Fubara. He argued that Wike has convinced the President that Fubara’s presence in office could hinder Tinubu’s prospects in Rivers State in the 2027 elections. According to Frank, security agencies and federal institutions have received directives to ensure Fubara yields to the President’s wishes or face removal.
Frank criticized the court ruling by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, calling it "unconstitutional" and forewarning of significant consequences should attempts be made to interfere with Rivers State’s statutory funds.
Warning Against Federal Interference in Rivers State Affairs
Frank issued a stern warning to President Tinubu, urging him to respect the autonomy of Rivers State. He asserted that any attempts to seize state funds or unseat Governor Fubara would meet firm resistance from the people of Rivers State and the broader Niger Delta region. Frank cautioned that such actions could lead to widespread unrest that the government may struggle to control.
“There will be severe consequences for any unconstitutional moves that destabilize Rivers State or attempt to intimidate and unseat Fubara. Rivers State and the Niger Delta are prepared to defend their sovereignty, and the fallout could reverberate across the country,” Frank warned.
Call for Support from the International Community
Frank appealed to international leaders to intervene in the situation, urging them to pressure President Tinubu to abandon any plans to force Fubara into the APC or remove him from office. He also highlighted the potential impact on the operations of International Oil Companies (IOCs) in the region, suggesting that peace is essential for these entities to function without disruption.
“A stitch in time saves nine,” Frank remarked, emphasizing the need for early intervention by the international community to prevent the situation from escalating.
Frank’s Call for Public Resistance and Accountability
Frank, who serves as the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, further denounced the Federal High Court's decision as an assault on democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria. He called upon Rivers State residents to resist unconstitutional actions and encouraged Nigerians to hold President Tinubu accountable for any negative outcomes affecting Governor Fubara or the people of Rivers State.
