Call for Immediate Action from INEC Chairman

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has formally called on Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to swiftly remove Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola from her position as Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State. Governor Makinde made this demand during a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally held in Akure, Ondo State, on Tuesday.

The Governor's request was based on concerns that Mrs. Babalola, being a native of Ondo State, may not act impartially in her role during the upcoming elections.

Concerns Over Fairness and Impartiality

Governor Makinde expressed his reservations about the REC's ability to ensure a fair and transparent election process. Speaking at the rally, he highlighted the potential conflict of interest, emphasizing the importance of appointing an unbiased REC.

"This message is for the INEC national chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood; you must remove the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ondo State, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola," Makinde stated. "She is from Ondo State, and we are concerned that her presence might compromise the integrity of the election."

Threat of Continued Protests

The Oyo State Governor did not stop at a mere request. He threatened sustained protests if Mrs. Babalola is not replaced with someone who can guarantee impartiality and fairness in the electoral process. Drawing a comparison to the situation in Edo State, he asserted that similar actions taken there would not be tolerated in Ondo.

"We will protest until she is removed," Makinde declared, adding, "Bring another REC that will be fair and that will allow a level playing field. We, as PDP, are not afraid of a fair contest. Remove her, or we will continue to protest."

PDP's Demand for a Fair Election

Governor Makinde’s statements reflect the PDP's broader concern over the neutrality of electoral officials in upcoming state elections. The party insists on a level playing field and is prepared to take decisive action to ensure that no undue advantage is given to any political group or candidate.

The call for Mrs. Babalola's replacement has sparked debate about the role of regional affiliations in electoral oversight and the need for transparent election processes in Nigeria. As the Ondo election approaches, it remains to be seen how INEC will respond to this demand
