Bala Mohammed's Concern Over PDP Leadership and Loyalty
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has attributed the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the involvement of former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, and President Bola Tinubu. In an interview with Daily Trust, Mohammed expressed his belief that Wike is striving to assert himself as a PDP leader while allegedly collaborating with the All Progressives Congress (APC), thus jeopardizing the unity and purpose of the PDP.
Tinubu’s Support for Wike Raises Concerns
Governor Mohammed disclosed that President Tinubu is supporting Wike’s ambition to influence the PDP from within, despite Wike's apparent alignment with the APC. According to Mohammed, Wike’s actions are a contradiction to the principles of party loyalty and undermine the integrity of the PDP.
“Tinubu is backing Wike, who remains in the PDP while also aligning with the APC,” Mohammed stated. “It’s an unusual situation, but that’s the reality. In line with natural justice, you can only belong to one camp. You can’t be part of two opposing sides simultaneously.”
Media’s Role in the Crisis
Mohammed criticized the media for, in his view, normalizing this unusual situation by allowing Wike to act as a PDP leader despite his public disapproval of the party’s direction. Mohammed highlighted that Wike’s reluctance to support the PDP in the 2027 elections has not faced enough scrutiny.
“The media is also partly responsible, as they seem to endorse these unimaginable scenarios,” he argued. “You can’t allow someone to act as a leader in a party he openly said he won’t support, especially for the 2027 elections. Why hasn’t this been questioned?”
Division Among Party Members Over Wike's Influence
The governor further pointed to discontent within the party, as some members believe that the PDP’s acting national chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, is influenced by Wike. This perception, according to Mohammed, has created friction within the PDP’s leadership.
“Many party members believe that the current National Working Committee (NWC), under Ambassador Damagum, is leaning towards Wike,” Mohammed stated. “Wike’s declaration of his unwillingness to support the PDP in 2027 has contributed to the instability we are facing. We are focused on reclaiming power in 2027, and any disloyalty is unacceptable.”
A Call for Unity and Loyalty in the PDP
Despite his concerns, Mohammed expressed optimism that the PDP could overcome its internal challenges. He emphasized the need for loyalty to the party’s vision as it prepares for the 2027 elections and stated that individuals like Wike, who are unwilling to align with this goal, should not be allowed to disrupt the party's efforts.
“I don’t have anything personal against Wike,” he clarified. “I would have supported him if he showed loyalty to the party. But he’s made it clear that he won’t. We cannot let disloyalty undermine our objectives as we build toward 2027.”
Governor Bala Mohammed’s statements underscore his commitment to the PDP's unity and highlight his concerns over any actions he perceives as detrimental to the party’s cohesion. As the PDP looks to the future, the governor's message serves as a call for clarity and commitment within its ranks
