MAIDEN INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT ON DELTAS
I am excited to announce the First International Deltas Summit to be held at the Asia Institute of Technology, Thailand from March 17 -20, 2025.
This important Summit will produce the white paper to request the United Nations @UN to make operational the United Nations Convention for Conserving River Deltas (UNCCRD).
Bayelsa State Government is working with other partners led by the African Centre for Climate Actions and Rural Development Initiative (ACCARD) to advance the UNCCRD.
This new UN Convention, which I personally unveiled at COP28 in Dubai in December 2023 with large delegations from the Pakistani Senate, Bangladesh and the United States, is so dear to my heart. This convention has been designed with a bottom-up approach, allowing for local people and affected delta communities to actively participate in policies and decision-making processes at all levels, including negotiations at the United Nations.
This is a game-changing convention to help us to find accelerated solutions to deltas challenges and it is inclusive. We cannot overlook the over half a billion people living or depending on global delta resources, which further underscore the urgent need for an operational UNCCRD.
Recall that my dear State of Bayelsa was almost submerged by a devastating flood in 2022, similar to the disaster in Pakistan and Bangladesh. We need to be more proactive to find accelerated solutions to increasing challenges in our deltas that are aggravated by climate change. This is widening the problems of food insecurity, conflicts, forced migration, livelihood and biodiversity loss, poverty and death.
As leader of the Global Governance Committee of the UNCCRD, I urge us to work together to save our deltas and the population of people living and depending on them for survival.
Thank you.
H.E Senator Douye Diri
Governor, Bayelsa State (Nigeria)
