Former DSS Director Advises Tinubu to Release Nnamdi Kanu

Mike Ejiofor, a former director of the Department of State Services (DSS), has urged President Bola Tinubu to consider ordering the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Ejiofor emphasized that releasing Kanu could serve as a critical step toward addressing the escalating insecurity and criminal activities plaguing the Southeast region.

Advocating for Security Prioritization

Ejiofor highlighted the need for the federal government to prioritize security in the Southeast, where "unknown gunmen" have continued to perpetrate acts of violence. He argued that these criminal elements often claim to act in support of Kanu, despite the IPOB leader condemning their actions.

“When you come to the Southeast, I think the government should take the initiative to find a political solution to the issue in the region, especially with regard to the unknown gunmen and Nnamdi Kanu,” Ejiofor stated.

Political Solution as a Path to Stability

The former DSS director appealed to the government to explore a political solution by releasing Kanu unconditionally, as a means of restoring peace in the region. “I will strongly appeal to the government to use this opportunity to unconditionally release Kanu and let us see. People who are killing innocent people claim to be fighting for Kanu, but he has condemned these actions,” he noted.

Ejiofor further pointed out that Kanu has consistently distanced himself from the infamous Monday sit-at-home directives that have crippled the region’s economy and disrupted daily life.

Economic Impact of Southeast Crisis

Ejiofor questioned the rationale behind the actions of those purportedly fighting for Kanu while simultaneously harming the region’s economy. “How can you be fighting for people and, at the same time, destroy their economy and their means of livelihood?” he queried.

The call to release Kanu aligns with broader calls for dialogue and reconciliation as viable paths toward addressing the underlying grievances fueling unrest in the Southeast
