A Tribute to Our Great Ijaw Leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark

19 February 2025

Ijaw nation has lost a great leader

The passing of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark marks the end of an era—an era of unwavering dedication, unrelenting advocacy, and fearless leadership for the Ijaw people and the entire Niger Delta. A statesman, nationalist, and defender of justice, Pa E.K. Clark was not just a leader but a movement—a force of nature whose voice resonated beyond the shores of the Niger Delta to the highest corridors of power in Nigeria. He fought tirelessly for the emancipation of his people, never wavering in his quest for equity, fairness, and development.

Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Chief Clark’s journey in public service spanned decades, from his early days in politics as a councillor in 1953 to becoming a federal commissioner of information under General Yakubu Gowon’s administration. His role in the formation of the University of Benin, his leadership in the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), and the establishment of Edwin Clark University stand as lasting legacies of his vision for education, empowerment, and progress.

Chief Clark was more than a political icon; he was a guardian of the Ijaw heritage, a man whose courage and tenacity exceeded that of many from the younger generation. He stood firm against oppression, speaking truth to power without fear. He was a father to the Niger Delta struggle, a champion of resource control, and a symbol of resilience.

His philanthropy, wisdom, and mentorship touched countless lives, and his voice will be dearly missed in national conversations on justice and governance. Even at 97, his passion for his people remained undiminished. Until his last breath, he continued to fight, never relenting in his advocacy for the rights of his people.

Pa Edwin Clark, replacing a man like you will be difficult. Your legacy remains an eternal flame in the heart of the Ijaw nation and Nigeria at large. You fought beyond your years, beyond expectations, and with a love for your people that knew no bounds.

Rest well, great leader. We miss you. Adieu!
