The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has announced the Commission’s commitment to constructing a modern motor park, market, and landing jetty in Oporoma, the headquarters of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in Bayelsa State.
Strategic Development for Anticipated Growth
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to the Anabanawei, Ayibakuro Ogidi Oke (traditional ruler) and leadership of Oporoma. Dr. Ogbuku stated that the construction of these key infrastructural projects was in anticipation of the completion of the Yenagoa-Angiama-Oporoma road currently being executed by the Bayelsa State Government. Once completed, the road is expected to significantly improve access to Oporoma, thereby increasing socioeconomic activities in the area.
Responding to requests from community leaders, Dr. Ogbuku emphasized the importance of proactive infrastructure planning. According to him, the motor park, market, and jetty will serve not only Oporoma but the entire Southern Ijaw Local Government Area and even external visitors. These developments aim to stimulate trade, transportation, and commerce in the region.
A Hub for Economic and Social Advancement
Dr. Ogbuku noted that Oporoma’s strategic position as a host community to major oil companies, including Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), makes it a vital location for such public infrastructure. He said that the jetty, in particular, would improve water transportation, which remains a primary means of movement in riverine communities. The motor park would serve as a central transit point, while the market would create opportunities for local businesses and agricultural producers.
“This investment is not just for today, but a legacy for future generations,” he said. “The market will become a center of commerce, the park will ease mobility, and the jetty will open the waterways to improved logistics. Together, they will help unlock the economic potential of this region.”
Appreciation for Ongoing NDDC Projects
The NDDC boss also took time to appreciate the community for recognizing the Commission’s earlier projects in the area, such as the installation of solar-powered street lights and the construction of a modern multipurpose community hall. These projects, he noted, were part of the Commission’s broader strategy to enhance the quality of life for residents across the Niger Delta.
Dr. Ogbuku assured the people that the NDDC remains committed to impactful grassroots development and reiterated his belief in working closely with communities to identify and prioritize their most urgent needs.
New Commitments: Education and Welfare
In addition to the previously announced projects, Dr. Ogbuku pledged to construct a modern corpers’ lodge for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed to the area. He acknowledged the challenges faced by corp members in rural communities and said providing a safe, comfortable environment would encourage them to serve with dedication.
Furthermore, he promised to facilitate the installation of digital learning facilities in Oporoma schools to enhance access to quality education. According to him, students in primary and secondary schools must not be left behind in the digital era, and every effort should be made to bridge the technology gap.
“The future of this community depends on the knowledge and skills of its young people. Education is the foundation, and we must make it strong,” he emphasized.
Royal Blessings and Goodwill
Responding on behalf of the community, a spokesperson of the Anabanawei of Oporoma expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Ogbuku for his dedication to development and his tangible contributions to the community. He offered prayers for divine guidance and protection for the NDDC boss, wishing him even greater heights in his political and public service career.
“You have shown leadership with vision and compassion,” the community representative said. “We believe that the seeds you are planting today will bear fruits for generations. May you not only be the MD of NDDC but rise to even higher national responsibilities.”
Dignitaries in Attendance
Dr. Ogbuku was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Dr. Doodei Agbapou Week, the NDDC Director of Procurement and an indigene of the area; Hon. Orunimighe Tiwei, a former Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area; Hon. Coronation Topmost, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC); and other notable personalities from both the public and private sectors.
Their presence underscored the significance of the visit and the collective interest in the development of Oporoma and the wider Southern Ijaw region.
A Visit of Purpose and Respect
The NDDC Managing Director’s visit to Oporoma was not solely for developmental discussions. He was in the community to pay his respects and honor the late father-in-law of Honourable Obolo Bubou, a former Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and the current Majority Leader of the Assembly. Before proceeding to the burial ceremony, Dr. Ogbuku made time to visit and consult with the leadership of the host community—a gesture that was well received and commended by the traditional authorities.
Conclusion: A Visionary Step for Southern Ijaw
Dr. Samuel Ogbuku’s engagement with the people of Oporoma marks a significant milestone in the NDDC’s ongoing mission to bring inclusive development to the Niger Delta. The proposed motor park, market, and landing jetty are not just physical structures but vital tools for economic transformation, empowerment, and regional integration.
By committing to these projects and prioritizing education and welfare, the NDDC under Dr. Ogbuku is reinforcing its mandate to build a prosperous and connected Niger Delta region—one community at a time
