SARAKI URGES PDP STAKEHOLDERS TO CEASE LITIGATION AND PRIORITIZE 2027 ELECTORAL READINESS
ABUJA — Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has issued a decisive call for unity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging leaders and stakeholders to "bury the hatchet" following the recent Court of Appeal judgment regarding the party’s national convention.
In a statement released on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Saraki emphasized that the party must pivot immediately toward organizing a fresh national convention that strictly adheres to the guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
JUDICIAL FINALITY AND STRATEGIC RECOVERY
Reacting to the appellate court's verdict on the Ibadan convention, Saraki advised party leadership to view the decision as the conclusion of all legal disputes. He noted that the revised INEC timetable leaves no room for further appeals to the Supreme Court without risking the party's ability to field candidates for the 2027 general elections.
"There is no time to wait for a Supreme Court decision," Saraki stated. "Otherwise, we would not meet the deadlines for completing the process of nominating candidates, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over the validity of our tickets."
PROTECTING THE ASPIRATIONS OF GRASSROOTS MEMBERS
The former Senate President highlighted that the primary function of a political party is to provide a viable platform for its members. He warned that continued bickering only serves to jeopardize the ambitions of thousands of loyal members seeking offices in the Houses of Assembly, National Assembly, and executive positions.
Saraki argued that statesmanship requires leaders to rise above bruised egos and personal interests to serve the "larger common interests and public good."
THE PATH TO AN ALL-INCLUSIVE CONVENTION
According to the statement, the only viable path forward for the PDP is a "give-and-take" approach. Saraki called for:
- Immediate Cessation of Litigation: Ending all court cases to provide stability.
- Adherence to INEC Timelines: Ensuring all internal processes are legally airtight.
- Inclusive Dialogue: Engaging all factions to ensure the upcoming national convention accommodates diverse interests.
A CALL FOR STATESMANSHIP
Saraki concluded by reminding the feuding factions that the party’s survival depends on their ability to let "sleeping dogs lie." He cautioned that any further grandstanding would only serve to undermine the honest investments of grassroots mobilizers who remain committed to the PDP’s success in 2027.[Wisdom Tide News****
