Dr. Iliyasu Musa Kwankwaso, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, has urged Nigerians to refrain from politicizing security matters. He stressed that doing so only serves to hinder the government’s efforts in combating terrorism and insecurity across the nation. Speaking to journalists in Kano, Kwankwaso emphasized the need for collective support in addressing the security challenges facing the country.

Impact of Politicizing Security Matters

Kwankwaso expressed concern over the growing trend of politicizing security issues, noting that it creates unnecessary distractions for both the government and security agencies. According to him, viewing security operations through a political lens weakens the overall effectiveness of the government’s strategy and compromises efforts aimed at ensuring a safer Nigeria.

He pointed out that political interference often obstructs the smooth implementation of security measures, making it harder for the government to execute its plans. "The fight against terrorism and banditry is a serious one," Kwankwaso said, "and we must allow the government and security agencies to focus on their job without unnecessary interference from political actors."

Support for Military Operations in Sokoto

During the briefing, Kwankwaso lauded the Ministry of Defense and the Nigerian military for their recent efforts to combat terrorism, particularly in the northwestern part of the country. He highlighted the relocation of military forces to Sokoto as a strategic move that would enhance the ability of security forces to deal with banditry and terrorism in the region.

Kwankwaso noted that the military’s presence in Sokoto has already begun to produce positive results. He praised the dedication of the soldiers, describing their actions as a necessary step towards restoring peace in Sokoto and its neighboring states. "The relocation of the military to Sokoto is a bold step, and we are already seeing the impact of their presence," he stated.

Addressing Political Divisions in Zamfara State

Kwankwaso also condemned the actions of what he described as "political jobbers" who, according to him, are sowing discord between former Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle and Aminu Sani Jaji, the member representing Birnin Magaji/Kauran Namoda Federal Constituency. He warned that such political maneuvering only serves to complicate the ongoing efforts to address security challenges in the region.

The APC chieftain cautioned against allowing personal or political interests to interfere with the fight against terrorism, especially in a region like Zamfara, which has been heavily affected by banditry. He called on political actors to put aside their differences and work together for the common goal of ensuring peace and security in the region.

Commendation for Governor Matawalle's Anti-Banditry Initiatives

While speaking on the efforts of Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle in tackling insecurity, Kwankwaso commended the governor for his proactive measures. He specifically praised the governor’s initiative of offering a reward of N20 million to anyone with information leading to the arrest of bandits.

Kwankwaso noted that such a measure demonstrates the seriousness with which the state government is approaching the issue of insecurity. "Governor Matawalle's reward for information on bandits is a strong message to criminals," he said. "It shows that the state government is committed to eradicating these criminal elements from our communities."

Questioning the Condemnation of Military Successes

Kwankwaso expressed disbelief at the criticism aimed at recent military operations, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 80 terrorists. He questioned why anyone would condemn such an action, especially given the severity of the security situation in the affected areas.

"People are being killed by these terrorists, and the situation had become dire," Kwankwaso remarked. "Now that the Ministry of Defense has taken concrete steps to address the issue, to the extent that about 80 terrorists were killed in one operation, why would any right-thinking person condemn such a successful action?"

Kwankwaso stressed the importance of supporting the military’s efforts and the government’s overall security strategy. He urged Nigerians to unite behind the security forces in their fight against terrorism and refrain from unnecessary criticism.

Call for Unity in Combating Terrorism

In conclusion, Kwankwaso called for national unity in the fight against terrorism and banditry, urging Nigerians to support the government’s efforts without resorting to political games. He reiterated that combating insecurity should not be viewed as a political issue but as a collective national responsibility.

According to Kwankwaso, only through cooperation and a unified approach can the country hope to overcome the current security challenges and restore peace across affected regions.
