Obaseki Accused of Orchestrating Mass Protests
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council in Edo State has raised concerns, accusing Governor Godwin Obaseki of planning a series of mass protests aimed at destabilizing the state. According to the APC, the protests are scheduled to begin on September 15, 2024, as part of a larger strategy to create national unrest ahead of the Edo State governorship election.

In a statement issued by the Director of Media, Prince Kassim Afegbua, the APC campaign team alleges that Governor Obaseki has enlisted the support of other governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to exacerbate the crisis on a national scale.

Allegations of a Plot Detailed in Benin Meeting
The APC's press release suggests that Governor Obaseki outlined his plans during a meeting held on September 8, 2024, at the Edo State Government House in Benin City. According to the party, the meeting was attended by several individuals linked to the killing of Inspector Akor Onu, who have yet to face law enforcement.

Afegbua further claims that an Assistant Commissioner of Police is actively shielding these individuals from prosecution. The officer is alleged to be working in close coordination with Governor Obaseki’s Chief Security Officer to obstruct efforts by law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.

Unequal Treatment of Political Party Members
The APC also accuses the state security forces of biased actions, citing an incident in which seven APC members and three PDP members were arrested by the Commander of the 4th Brigade at Inikorogha. According to the APC, while the PDP members were swiftly released, the APC members remained in detention until their legal team intervened on Sunday. The party views this as part of a wider strategy to suppress opposition voices ahead of the upcoming election.

Claims of Nationwide Protests and School Delays
In a broader allegation, the APC Campaign Council claims that Governor Obaseki has been urging PDP-controlled states to delay the resumption of schools. The party asserts that this is part of a coordinated effort to ignite protests nationwide, aimed at discrediting the APC-led Federal Government.

Call for Security Agencies to Act
Given the heightened tensions and the proximity of the Edo State governorship election, the APC has called on national security agencies, particularly the Inspector General of Police, to take immediate action to prevent any breakdown of law and order. The party stressed that such protests and unrest could undermine the democratic process and endanger public safety.

At the time of this report, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation in Edo State, Chris Nehikhare, had not yet responded to these allegations.
