Governor Lawal Accuses Defence Minister of Involvement in Banditry

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has made serious accusations against Defence Minister Bello Matawalle, alleging his involvement in the ongoing banditry crisis in northern Nigeria. Speaking on TVC’s Politics Tonight program, Governor Lawal disclosed that he had obtained credible information linking his predecessor, Matawalle, to the surge in banditry that has plagued Zamfara and surrounding states.

"From all the information we’re receiving, my predecessor was fully involved in some of these banditry activities," Lawal stated during the interview, sparking renewed scrutiny of Matawalle's role in the region's security crisis.

Ongoing Banditry Crisis in Northern Nigeria

The northern states of Zamfara, Kaduna, and Katsina have been severely affected by banditry, with armed groups carrying out violent attacks, kidnappings, and other criminal activities. The allegations against Matawalle come at a time when the federal and state governments are under increasing pressure to address the deteriorating security situation in the North West region.

Prior Allegations Against Matawalle

This is not the first time that Defence Minister Matawalle has been accused of complicity in banditry. In July, notorious bandit leader Bello Turji released a video in which he claimed that Matawalle had been involved in supporting terrorism in the region. These allegations have fueled suspicions about the possible involvement of political figures in the banditry crisis.

Despite the gravity of these claims, Matawalle has consistently denied any involvement. His media consultant, Deyemi Saka, has dismissed the allegations as baseless and unfounded, insisting that the minister has no connection to terrorist activities in the region.

Calls for Accountability

Governor Lawal’s public accusations add further pressure on Defence Minister Matawalle to step down from his position and face investigation. The calls for his resignation come at a critical moment, as the Nigerian government seeks to restore peace and security in the troubled North West.

The ongoing banditry crisis has devastated communities, disrupted economic activities, and left thousands of people displaced. With these new allegations, there is mounting public demand for a thorough investigation into the minister’s alleged role in perpetuating the violence.

Conclusion

As the situation unfolds, the federal government may be forced to take decisive action to address the security challenges in the North. Whether or not Matawalle will resign or be formally investigated remains to be seen, but the accusations against him have raised serious concerns about the involvement of political figures in Nigeria's persistent security challenges.
