Introduction:

Asue Ighodalo, the governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has responded firmly to recent comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Ighodalo's remarks come in light of Wike's assertion that he would not endorse Ighodalo for the upcoming September 21 gubernatorial election.

Disputing Wike's Influence:

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ighodalo addressed Wike’s statements, clarifying that the Minister does not hold the authority to determine the outcome of the Edo governorship election. Wike’s recent disclosure included his claim that Governor Godwin Obaseki had approached him twice, along with Ighodalo, to seek his support for the PDP candidate.

Ighodalo expressed his dissatisfaction with Wike’s portrayal of their discussions. He emphasized that Wike’s comments did not accurately reflect the nature or the results of their conversations.

Reaffirming the Role of Edo Citizens:

According to Ighodalo, the decision regarding the next governor of Edo State rests solely with the electorate. He remarked, “The ultimate authority to decide who becomes the next governor of Edo State lies with its people, not with any individual political figure.”

Ighodalo reflected on their private discussions with Wike, asserting that the Minister had previously indicated a non-interventionist stance on Edo's affairs. “During our discussions, we focused on governance and the future of Edo State. Wike had assured us that he would not interfere, and the decision would be left to the people of Edo State,” Ighodalo noted.

Commitment to Fair Elections:

Ighodalo reiterated his commitment to accept the election results, provided the process is fair. “Should we lose this election, and it is clear that we lost it fairly, I will be the first to concede. However, I am confident that with a level playing field, we will emerge victorious,” he stated.

He further emphasized that no political figure, including governors or ministers, has the authority to impose a candidate upon the people. “It is the duty of Edo citizens, armed with their PVCs, to make this decision. I fear no man; I only fear God,” Ighodalo declared.

Conclusion:

Ighodalo concluded by affirming the trust and support he has garnered from the people of Edo State. He expressed confidence in their commitment to his candidacy, citing positive indicators and polls as evidence of his support base. “We have shared our vision with the people of Edo State, and they trust us. All the current indicators suggest a favorable outcome for us,” Ighodalo asserted
