PDP Support Group Questions Damagum’s Secret Meeting With Tinubu
A recent report by The Independent has sparked controversy within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding a secret meeting between Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the party's Acting National Chairman, and President Bola Tinubu in London. The Middlebelt PDP Youth Support Group, led by Comrade Ogwu Abel, has raised concerns about this meeting, accusing Damagum of aligning with forces within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilize the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
Allegations of Collusion with the APC
The Middlebelt PDP Youth Support Group alleges that Damagum is actively involved in efforts to undermine the PDP from within. In their statement, they expressed frustration that Damagum, instead of defending the party’s interests, has been collaborating with what they describe as the "enemies of the party." According to the group, Damagum’s actions suggest a deliberate attempt to weaken the PDP and its chances in future elections.
"It is unfortunate that the acting national chairman of our great party is leading this effort," the group stated, highlighting that this is not the first time Damagum has been accused of working against the party's interests.
Criticism Over Silence on National Issues
The group also criticized Damagum for his silence on critical issues affecting Nigerians, particularly the economic hardships attributed to the policies of the APC-led government. They noted that while the country is experiencing significant challenges, the Acting Chairman has remained unresponsive, choosing instead to meet secretly with the president.
“While Nigerians are being impoverished, he remains unresponsive and has chosen to meet secretly with the president to advance the APC’s agenda,” the statement read, reflecting the group’s concern about Damagum’s priorities during a time of national crisis.
Calls for Accountability and Leadership Change
In addition to accusing Damagum of working against the party, the support group also questioned the lack of accountability within the PDP. They raised concerns over the absence of disciplinary actions against those engaging in activities considered anti-party. The group’s frustrations culminated in a call for Damagum’s immediate removal, stating that they no longer have confidence in his leadership.
“We urge stakeholders to take immediate action,” the group demanded, urging party leaders to act swiftly to prevent further damage to the PDP.
Concerns for the Future of the PDP
The Middlebelt PDP Youth Support Group stressed the urgency of strong and principled leadership within the PDP, especially as the party prepares for the 2027 elections. They warned that if Damagum continues to lead, the PDP risks losing its standing as a viable opposition party capable of offering meaningful alternatives to Nigerians.
“Nigeria is in dire need of a Messiah, and with the likes of Damagum at the helm, the PDP stands little chance in the upcoming 2027 elections,” the group concluded, underscoring the high stakes for the party as internal tensions rise.
Implications for the PDP’s Strategy and Unity
As the PDP navigates these allegations and criticisms, the internal unrest could significantly affect the party's strategy and unity heading into a critical electoral period. With calls for Damagum's removal growing louder, the party must address these concerns promptly to maintain cohesion and credibility among its members and the electorate
