Rivers State Crisis Deepens as Governor Fubara Sidesteps Amaewhule-Led Assembly Faction on 2025 Budget
Governor Fubara’s Bold Move
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has escalated political tensions in the state by announcing that he will bypass the faction of the State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule in presenting the 2025 budget. Instead, the governor plans to deliver the budget proposal to a smaller, four-member faction of the Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo. This decision underscores the deepening divide within the state’s legislative body.
Budget Presentation Plan Revealed
Governor Fubara disclosed his intentions at the inauguration of two community town halls and during the launch of a scholarship and empowerment initiative for the Akiama and Aganya communities in Bonny Local Government Area. At the event, he commended Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo for his support in facilitating legislative processes, including the screening of caretaker committee chairmen and advancing executive requests.
Fubara emphasized the vital role of the Assembly in passing the state’s 2025 budget, thereby reaffirming his administration’s determination to move forward despite the legislative rift.
Criticism of the Amaewhule Faction
In his remarks, Fubara openly criticized members of the Amaewhule-led faction, accusing them of neglecting their constituents and failing to initiate or supervise meaningful projects in the state. He claimed that these lawmakers have abandoned their legislative duties in favor of political interests, further intensifying the rift between the two factions.
Governor Fubara attributed the ongoing conflict to self-serving pursuits of power and control over state resources, which he believes have overshadowed the responsibilities of certain legislators.
Commitment to Development and Service Delivery
Despite the political strife, Governor Fubara expressed his unwavering commitment to delivering development projects and services to the people of Rivers State. He urged all elected officials to prioritize their constituents' needs over political rivalries, stressing that effective governance should transcend factional disputes.
Governor Fubara’s decision to proceed with the budget presentation to the Oko-Jumbo-led faction represents a significant stance, as he aims to maintain governmental operations amidst a fractured Assembly
