Death of Pa James Oghoroko Sparks Outrage

The President-General of the Okuama Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Pa James Oghoroko, has reportedly died under controversial circumstances in military detention. His death, allegedly caused by torture and inhumane treatment, has raised serious concerns about the treatment of detainees in military custody.

Arrest of Community Leaders

Pa Oghoroko was among several community leaders arrested by the Nigerian military in August 2024. Alongside him were Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Dennis Okugbaye, Pa Anthony Ahwemuria, and Mrs. Rita Akata. Their arrests occurred between August 18 and 20, and they have remained in detention without trial since.

News of Oghoroko’s death was disclosed during an emergency meeting held by Okuama community leaders. It was also revealed that another detained leader, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, is reportedly battling for his life in an undisclosed military facility.

Legal Actions Against the Nigerian Army

In response to their arrests, the Okuama community filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the detentions. The case, identified as Suit No: FHC/WR/CS/84/2024, was filed by the community’s legal representatives, demanding ₦100 million in damages from the Nigerian Army and other parties involved.

Additionally, following the military's demolition and destruction of Okuama in the wake of an incident where 17 soldiers were killed, the community sought redress through the courts. Multiple suits—FHC/WR/CS/41/2024, FHC/WR/CS/42/2024, and FHC/WR/CS/43/2024—were filed, and the Federal High Court in Warri has since consolidated them.

At its last sitting on November 20, 2024, the court scheduled a hearing for December 9, 2024, to address the bail applications of the detained leaders. However, Oghoroko’s death on December 4 has cast a shadow over the legal proceedings.

Reactions to Oghoroko’s Death

Lead Counsel Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, SAN, described Oghoroko’s death as deeply disturbing. He stated his intention to meet with the late leader’s family and his legal team to determine the next course of action.

The tragic news has plunged the Okuama community into mourning. Residents expressed their grief and anger, with youths visibly upset and seen discussing the incident in small groups.

Growing Tension and Calls for Justice

The death of Pa James Oghoroko has intensified calls for justice and accountability. The community is demanding answers about the conditions of the military detention center and the failure to present the detained leaders in court. As tensions rise, the Okuama community awaits the December 9 court date with heightened anticipation and concern
